Hello

I'm one of those nasty high end downloaders that sentech has finally terminated by closing down the high bandwidth service (and losing their last remaining draw card - now they are just good at being slower, less reliable, and more useless than any other service), so I need to move to ADSL. I've been downloading 20Gb or so per month.

I download TV programs from USA SCI-FI Channel with Bittorent (since DSTV screwed us all when they closed the SCI-FI channel here).

Questions:

1. Do I go with Telkom or IS ? (bandwidth not ISP).
2. Can I use Shaped ADSL or must I go for unshaped ?

Telkom will give you more than 3gigs on a 3gig account. Around 4 or 5 times your baught cap, depending on when you start using it. The earlier in the month, the better. Shaped is okay, but unshaped is better if you can afford it... ;) Uncapped is also better than capped, if you can afford it...

Yeah, go with SAIX, much more reliable than IS, even tho its Telkom. If its just downloading your doing, a shaped account is absolutly fine, as you are not gonna need to worry about prioritising any ports.. When Telkom Internet works its great, you get to excede your cap by maybe 3-4 times the amount..

They do cap, but not on your paid for limit... It is unfair towards other ISPs, but ISPs should fight for their rights if they cannot compete. It is not the duty of the consumer to shoot him/herself in the foot by taking inferior service just because we hate Telkom. If Telkom is better, use Telkom. The ISPs can and MUST stand up and demand equal capacity.
