I have dealt with house before and had no issues. He sent me Huisgenoot skouspel tickets and didn't even want me to pay for the courier fees. Sure we talking about the same guy?

He did the same for me. Cannot say anything bad about him.

Well that's hardly the topic here.

You're talking about fail safes, or lack thereof... This is definitely much safer than Gumtree. The lack of an iTrader system just means to me that I'm not going to accept shipped items - just like I'd do with a seller with low iTraders on Carbonite (which is also free access, like Gumtree... Only difference is that if you screw up, there's no coming back)

Look, I don't think that it was a scam, he obviously just took a higher offer after concluding the deal with me. Legally, the computer does not belong to him, it is mine and I owe him R9000. So it wasn't his to sell to someone else.

But yes, not much that one can do about it, even though I do have a legally enforcible case it is not really worth pursuing.

As much as this kind of scenario is unethical it does happen far more often than most people think. You concluded an agreement of sale which the seller appears to have reneged on for whatever reason however this does not entitle you to ownership of the "goods". At best you can try enforce performance of the contract by means of legal avenues but at great cost and no guaranteed outcome. I would chalk it up to experience and walk away - it could've been worse (No cash and no laptop).

Unfortunately this is just a bad classified experience. It happens on a thousand times over on classifieds like Gumtree, Locanto and other forums. It's something that you need to put to rest and move on with. Yes it is unethical and sucks, but that's a risk you take when purchasing over a classified.

Legally the item belongs to the owner until an exchange is made. The deal only concludes once there is a cash exchange. I had a similar incident happen to me as well and there's really nothing that can be done about it.

If you also look at it from the a different view, there are people who promise to buy an item and don't show up as well. This had also happened to me and again, there's nothing that can be done.

In no way am i promoting or justifying his behavior, but just be grateful that you weren't scammed by anyone for your money.

Use the Cash to pay your bills, avoid the Bank charges as far as possible.

Yes, will do, but I pay most bills by EFT. Will have to pay cash for fuel.

Or wait for a purchase of a similar product? Not sure if that will happen as I don't recall what you're looking for and I don't know if it was a once in a lifetime deal...

Not really going to happen, I quite like that particular product and it was a reasonable price.

I have enough notebooks, don't really need another, that one just tempted me.

If you have a classified section on a site then in my opinion the site is making themselves responsible.
If you don't want to police the classified then don;t have the section.

+1

I don't understand why itrader is not an option (I've read the proposed reasons in this thread).

Of course iTrader isn't a guarantee that a deal won't go bad, but it certainly helps a lot.
