Hi all

I deployed a Unifi Dream Router to replace my ageing Apple Extremen Router. I got the internet connection going, but certain sites and services are not working. I logged a ticket with CoolIdeas, but they do not have specific advice (other than decreasing the MTU to 1436).

After some hours of Googling, it appears that it is the PPPoE protocol that is to blame

Background
  • I am an extreme novice
  • used Apple Airport Extreme (Router & AP) and Airport (as additional wired AP) before this
  • Wanted to upgrade to Unifi to utilise VLANs etc for parental control and other security objectives and general network upgrade (from n to ax)
First Setup
  • I setup the Dream Router (DR) with 1 basic network and 1 Wifi network to see if everything works like my apple network
  • Entered PPoE credentials
  • Kept everything as Auto as possible
  • Updated all Firmware/Software (Both router and Console)
  • Dream Router WAN connected directly to Fibre ONT (aka CPE)
Problem
  • Cannot access Netflix or AmazonPrime on Smart TV (Skyworth > Wired Ethernet)
  • Cannot access Netflix or AmazonPrime on Smart TV (Samsung > Wifi)
  • Cannot access Netflix.com on Safari (Mac > Wifi)
  • Can access Amazonprime.com but no response when clicking on “log in” (Mac > Wifi)
  • Cannot access community.ui.com on Mac or iPhone (wifi)
  • Cannot access reddit posts from google search (on this problem)
Troubleshooting

My limited trouble shooting was to switch between the following DNS server options
  • Auto
  • ISP DNS (same ISP as per boegmans post referenced)
  • Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
same result..

I do not get time outs. Merely indefinite spinning load circles.

When reverting back to my Apple router - no problem.

Any help will be appreciated. I will ideally not want to but a router between the Modem and the Dream Router

Thanks in advance

Another user @boegman experienced exactly the same problem with Unifi and CoolIdeas here

Hi, Set the MSS to 1436

Hi, Set the MSS to 1436
Hi. I went lower. Read about difference between MTU and MSS. MSS being lower than MTU by 40. So I went to 1396 being 40 lower than your suggested 1436 and it worked.

Ended at setting MSS at 1400 and Netflix and other blocked sites are working

Cool, you shouldn't have to go that low however. Which FNO are you using?

Vumatel with 50/50 line.

I can try 1410 and 1420. I know 1436 will not work. So what is the benefits of 1420 (if that works) vs 1400 that is workinf now

I had same exact thing dropped the the MTU to 1406 and now everything works like a charm.

Took me a long time to figure out, I accessed the udr’s settings from the device tab went to services selected custom sms clamping and changed the max tcp connection segment size to 1406. (It was 1480)

A very very very slight speed increase in transfer rates (slightly bigger packets). Not worth pursuing IMHO. Go with what's stable and working.

Weird 1436 doesn’t work have always used that since I was with cool ideas but I think I even tried 1456 or something the other day and it worked also

You can do a MTU test but yes MSS is lower due to it only being the payload and excludes the IP header and TCP header could be wrong, long time since I did a read up on that

Thank you sir.

Replacing my Mikrotik with a Dream Router and couldn't get to reddit - ping and tracert fine but website wouldn't load.

Google search led me to this thread and voila - made the change and everything is working.

Thank you so much! This whole thread described my issue, and saved a lot of time. Much appreciated.
