UniForum wants co.za domain registration price increase

A 50‰ increase? Is ESKOM involved here?

It's to make the EPP solution even more attactive.
The only way Uniforum is going to usher people off legacy is to hit them in the pocket.
I would imagine that it is costly for them to maintain 2 systems, so I see nothing wrong with this increase.

I don't have a problem with this increase - I've always thought R50 per year was very cheap anyway!

Yes - this seems to be their reasoning and its perfectly valid IMO. This then effectively becomes the retail price for domains (with many hosting companies charging even more) and then the wholesale price for accredited registrars on the new EPP system is significantly less. You should be able to negotiate a good price for a large volume of domains through one of the registrars.

Actually a price increase which I can agree with. It's definitely way too cheap at the moment and has been for 10 years.

Once I can login to a control panel and manage my domains (like every other domain name provider out there) I'll be happy. Anything less than this is just a pain.

Could you explain more please? to a total n00b?

You know how, with godaddy.com for example, you register a domain and pay for it, it's immediately available?

Well, what co.za has done is the same thing (it's called EPP)

Here is a list of accredited registrars in South Africa https://www.registry.net.za/accredited_registrars.php (I use elitehost.co.za)

So now that you can become a registrar and provision domains immediately without a "ticket email" system, why the hell would anyone still want to use the legacy system?

Right? Now they're introducing Mr. Price Increase & forcing you to pay for the domain BEFORE it gets registered (because previously you could register a domain and only pay whenever you felt like it)

This is to try and "help" the masses to move to an accredited registrar and moving into the "new" era of EPP (something overseas people have enjoyed for decades now)

In the past CO.ZA used to show the number of domains registered - not so anymore I see. At R50 per domain they were making a fortune, and even at R35.

I do see they spend some of it on 'COZA cares'. Their brochure doesn't give any amounts though.

Hopefully the new EPP solutions will give more features.

PS. In May there were +- 780 000 domains @ R 50 => R 39 million/year
PPS. COZA cares - 10 million since 2001 - a drop in the COZA ocean.

I found a stats document on co.za and they currently have 847,222 domains registered. (https://www.registry.net.za/domain_stats.php?gen=1&contentid=104)

@ R50 per year that is R42 million a year.
@ R75 per year that is R63.5 million a year.

Surely it must cost WAY less than that to run the service? Sounds crazy.

That is something that the registrars are providing not the registries (like Uniforum and Verisign). There are a few registrars that already have pretty decent control panels that are integrated with the .co.za EPP API and you are free to choose the one that fits your requirements.

They want to increase their costs, yet their [email protected] inbox does't work...

Pretty much this. Time for people to move to the new system.

I am trying to find one to use. Can you recommend one where the guys have some kind of a panel to work with?

To register a .com with GoDaddy cost just $5.99 (R50.50) for a year and then you get basic hosting and email with it too.

They even have $1.50 domain specials sometimes which still include the above mentioned extras as well.
