Unions push for R1,500 basic income grant in South Africa

South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has called for the introduction of a R1,500 monthly grant aimed at South Africans over the age of 18 without work.

Why not rather get the unemployed pick up garbage or do some choirs twice a week for R1500.

What a difference that will make to fix some of these small towns that look like sh*t.

The state should look after all the unemployed, but put them in one large building and feed them at set times so at least the per-person costs can be reduced due to economics of scale. Same meals, same clothes, same haircuts, again to benefit from economics of scale.

Have high walls around the building and also put up barbed wire and metal bars across the windows so that people can't get out if it benefits them to be there.

You know on the subject of unemployment, we were having a discussion in the office the other day on how to solve the unemployment epidemic in our youth. Almost entirely universally we all agreed that bringing back conscription would be a huge step in the right direction. A bit off-topic I know, but still.

I like the idea of cleaning up towns & doing community work better.
