United States hits South Africa with 30% tariffs

No mention of which SA products specifically will incur 30% tariff hikes. It's not a blanket 30% being imposed on everything as far as I see it.

Since our biggest exports the the US are Platinum, Cars, Titanium and Aluminium I can't see them imposing 30% on platinum. Cars for sure...

When can we find the alpha on the details?

I see DARK CLOUDS LOOMING on the horizon - MASSIVE BAD NEWS for SA exporters.
Why ? Sure next to china, USA is the 3rd largest trading partner with Germany being second. They aren't the only trading partner there are several regional and international partners it isn't like exporters are being forced to use USA. It wouldn't surprise me if the USA falls off drastically in the next few months. USA accounts for 6.6% of total trade, china accounts for 18% and Germany 11%, india and japan, UK, france and middle east is in the mix as well.

it isn't like we don't have access to other markets, it will take time but it isn't like we can't find new partners or expand with existing partners.

Additionally countries affected by tariffs will likely be searching other markets for imports and exports.....USA is not end all be all it thinks it is..........the world is perfectly capable of surviving without them sure the immediate impact will devastating but it wouldn't be long lasting.USA has been in decline for some time and to be honest they are a bane to humankind, up to now they have been a necessary evil.....It wouldn't surprise me if at some point the rest of the world just tells them to fk off......

USA is a bully and the rest need to stand up and tell them to fck off.....

Lets not forget this trade war USA has going on will likely backfire, and there is already instances of it.

China takes our raw materials. USA takes our finished products. Massive difference in job creation and retention.
China is pretty much mining sector, and USA is across many sectors.

I can tell you now that food prices are going to skyrocket in the US. Vietnam with their 46% tariffs and Thailand with their 36% tariffs  Most seafood in the US comes from those two countries along with almost all the rice in stores. Thailand also produces a lot of SSD storage and cars, so those prices will jump up too.

Now for the USA to learn why the world moved away from tariffs. They have their own FAFO moment coming and I wonder if Trump survives the lesson and remains in power. Still, I strongly suspect it will only be on finished goods. Zero point putting tariffs on raw commodities as they are less transferable. You either have it or you don't, so why do tariffs on them. Trump's Tariffs are meant to bring manufacturing back to the USA, so I am guessing the tariffs will target finished goods, not commodities which make up a big part of our exports. Retaliatory tariffs are gonna hurt the US too, especially when the world figures out how to implement it on their knowledge and service economy. I see them taxing US tech, service, and entertainment, companies etc in the near future pushing people away from US companies overall.

so solidarity was not part of this, "good job" as a politician for selective picking only what the masses need to be informed about

Nope. Second.

US ChatGPT:

As of 2023, South Africa's second-largest trade partner was the United States. According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), South Africa's top export destinations were China ($29.5 billion), the United States ($13 billion), Germany ($10.8 billion), India ($10.8 billion), and the United Kingdom ($7.9 billion). Similarly, the World Bank reported that South Africa's top export partners were China ($11.7 billion), the United States ($10.7 billion), Germany ($8.8 billion), Japan ($8.5 billion), and the United Kingdom ($6.3 billion). These figures indicate that the United States consistently ranked as South Africa's second-largest trading partner in 2023. OEC WorldWITS

In the meantime there is a risk of layoffs and reduced revenue in an already f-ed up country, with massive unemployment and instability. But lots of Trump haters have also f-ed off out of SA and speak for it, but it's telling to see what they do and not what they say.

Also which markets? Because everyone is having tariffs which means SA has to compete with others who are also saying the same thing.

Additionally countries affected by tariffs will likely be searching other markets for imports and exports.....USA is not end all be all it thinks it is..........

More competition. Remember also with an economic downturn there will also be less demand for SA made cars. Are they even competitively priced? And of course the US is extremely important. Universities across SA are finding out as research grants are being cut.

USA is a bully and the rest need to stand up and tell them to fck off.....

So no more buying US developed ARVs then? Let 4+ million people just die? You're obviously not HIV positive. Of course America won't cut off that off. They're not such bad 'bullies'.

If you say so.

As long as there is access to anime, it's all good ;)

Remember the tarrifs will only affect prices on the US side, our imports from the US will be unaffected.

Any company/persons exporting to the US will likely see a dramatic reduction in orders from the US.

We'll be flooded with more cheap goods and more Runts will flow out. For a time, as long as people can afford to buy these.
