Dont know if this is a stupid question or not - Do they come WITH the HDDs?

The price seems kind of high just for RAID arrays..

never know if i dont ask.

Kernal - any chance of a MyBB Discount on the DiskStation DS112j ?

@Nemeses - afaik they dont have the HDDs

That said, using the DS112j as a small nas server in our office. Works great! Plan to get one to use at home.

Prices exclude drives, decent RAID platforms cost money, the Diskstations are actually one of the best priced in their class.

Naeem, MYBB members get discount on our entire product offering, discounts vary between brands but on the DS112j you'd get about a 15% discount.

How do we qualify for the discounts? Do we use a special code when ordering?

You contact our sales team and mention that you're a MYBB forum member, they then automatically apply the discounts.

Synology DS are awesome. Resellers (not just in SA) are charging hefty premiums and markup is really high. You will be able to get between 20-30% off the device when getting it directly from Synology (as an individual) and I would think that resellers margins are substantially higher (also considering that they would import in bulk)

That's not entirely true, our margins on Synology as a brand are actually quite low, shipping costs on the Synology products are around 15-20% because of the size and weight of the devices.

If you're getting 20-30% discount off the devices you still need to factor in shipping costs, customs clearing costs, VAT, land side costs etc... so once you've gone through the pain of doing this you'll probably find that it wasn't actually cheaper.

Dont forget then that the warranty is handled with Synology directly and if the unit did fail you'd need to ship it back to Taiwain, if the unit is purchased through ourselves we offer a local warranty on the product.

True. I do think it is great that you guys bring them in and perhaps you will eventually be in a better negotiating position. I ordered and imported a Synology DS1010+ in 2010 directly from Synology Taiwan. The DS1010+ retailed at that point in time at USD900-USD970 (Amazon had it at USD950). I managed to get it from Synology for USD666 (with USD exchange of R7,30/USD back then the device was R4900). Shipping, insurance duties etc was another 2,5K and it worked out roughly 7,5K.

The DS1512+ (basic features as DS1010+ and same firmware) comes in at almost 10K with you guys (this excludes HDD). I would guess that the DS1512+ would go for about 5-6K from Synology directly and their margin would still be high, considering that the Synology is really just a nice case with MB, fans and network - I would think technically it compares to the HP microservers (which go for 2K).

Nonetheless the Synology is a great device - my DS1010+ has been running 24/7 for 3 years now (5 x 3TB drives) and my DS107+ is now about 6 years old and no issue.

Personally I would rather go with a HP microserver. A DS1512+ would cost you 10K just for the case and you would pay 5K (for 5x1TB) or 9K (for 5x3TB) drives - quite hefty pricing...

I dont think its a fair comparison.... File transfer speeds on the DS1512+ would be far greater than the HP because it has a dual core processor, dual Gigabit interface which supports link aggregation, the HP is single core with a single Gigabit interface, HDD support is also not the same, the Synology supports bigger drives, it also has more raid support than the HP's 0 & 1.

The price on the HP is also closer to R3500, at that price point, you'll easily get a Synology that compares in terms of hardware specs and price.
