University of Pretoria student killed for his cellphone, 2 men arrested

"He called me to ask for money to play pool. That was the last [time] we spoke, just for him to be killed later."

These were the words of Zaib Sayed Suliman, a University of Pretoria student, when he recounted the last memory of his friend, Thapelo Menwe.

Menwe, 23, was shot and killed on Saturday morning.

A shattered Suliman told News24 that Menwe was killed in Hatfield as he walked to his apartment after spending a night with friends.

"Thapelo and I have been friends since school. We both went to Zeerust Hoerskool, and then we both attended UP. He graduated this year with a BCom in financial science and he was completing his honours in international auditing."

Suliman said the university lecturers and SRC were made aware of his murder on Sunday and Monday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said two men, aged 38 and 33, were arrested during a police patrol shortly after the shooting.

This is so common in SA, in fact, people get killed for way less than a cellphone.

Yeah no, embassy staff do not care. They and their security staff looks on when crimes occur and do not get involved. They offer no security. Being on the streets are dangerous in SA. Even more so if you have anything on your possession.

My bet the culprits are foreigners.

The one thing I hate about Hatfield is all the aggressive car guards there.
They know students put up with crap so they hustle for a tip much harder than other places.
Because it's in public streets the university does nothing and this just attracts more rif raf to the area.

There's a fair bit of police presence in the area from time to time. Also, it's not that the embassy staff don't care. They do and would help if conditions allowed them to. However, they have no jurisdiction outside their embassies. The best they can do is call the police.

That doesn't look like a mugging to me. They first have a conversation. If the guy wanted to rob the victim, he would have demanded the phone at gunpoint.

That doesn't look like a mugging to me. They first have a conversation. If the guy wanted to rob the victim, he would have demanded the phone at gunpoint.

When I got mugged, it looked more or less like this. In my case, one held a gun while the other made a series of demands. Inland muggers operate differently.

Since the US embassy and other embassies are located there. If an incident happens there it would embarrass government.

If anything bad in Hatfield happens it makes the news. If things happen elsewhere it most often won't make the news.

Hmm.. I live close to Hatfield. I wouldn't walk around there at night. Its not bad as other places... but Sunnyside etc is too close.

And in SA you would get shot for less than a cell phone. Where is son of garden boy to tell us that it's alcohol

Hatfield has never been "safe".

Also the US embassy isn't actually in Hatfield. It's nearby in Arcadia which in parts is even worse than Hatfield since it's right next to the CBD
