University of Zululand students blockaded the R102 near Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal with tyres, trees and stones on Monday to protest about security concerns.

Police spokesperson Capt Nqobile Gwala said public order police and officers from Mtunzini were monitoring the situation.

"The situation is tense at the moment," said Gwala.

At the heart of the students' concerns is crime.

Many took to social media on Monday to voice their anger about criminals robbing and attacking students attending the university.

In 2003, the Durban Institute of Technology's management slaughtered a beast on campus in an attempt to halt the death of students and staff so perhaps the University and students should look for advice to the Durban Institute of Technology.

Unizulu students arrested for allegedly stealing books and laptops from university book shop

Twelve University of Zululand (Unizulu) students will appear in court after allegedly breaking into the university's book store, stealing a number of goods and attempting to sell them to a local buyer.

According to police on Tuesday night there was a break-in at a book shop at Unizulu's KwaDlangezwa campus, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

That same night the KwaDlangezwa satellite police station was torched in the area.
