Hi there, I wonder if someone could help. I have a samsung gio cellphone and I had the pattern lock on it, my son played with the cellphone and now somehow the cellphone is locked and keeps asking me to put in the user name and password for an google account. When I put it in it keeps telling me that the user name and password is invalid. Can anyone help as I can't do nothing on the cellphone and can only receive incoming calls.

I had this problem. I had to hard reset the phone. Or whatever it's called. I had to reset to factory defaults. It was a pain, but I was fairly impressed that nothing on the SD card was lost, and all my contacts, etc came back after syncing with Google. I re-downloaded apps and was good to go in no time.

edit: You'll have to look up what specific key combination needs to be held when rebootinh the phone to force a reset. Mine was something like Menu + Select + Home

Is you problem with a pattern that doesn't work or your Google account doesnt work?

To confirm nothing is wrong with your Google account have you tried to log on to your Android market via a PC?

And pleeeease tell me you used Google's 2 step authentication?

The problem (as I experienced it) is that once the pattern has been entered incorrectly too many times, or you hit the Forgot Pattern button, you are asked to enter your Google credentials. Those credentials will not work. Even if you enter them correctly. Perhaps newer versions of Android have fixed this disastrous bug, but on my version it will not let you unlock your phone with your correct Googlemail login. :mad:

Aaah thanx for clearing that up, was wondering wth the pattern unlock had to do with Google credentials.

In that case did the OP by any chance toggle USB debugging as there is a way to rest it using adb commands on a PC.

Code:
> adb -d shell
# sqlite3 data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
sqlite> update system set value=0 where name='lock_pattern_autolock';
sqlite> .exit
# exit
> adb reboot

I think it may be coz of different android models because one thing I noticed is that on the SE Xperia Arc when you set up the pattern lock you have to have an addition question as well in case you forget your pattern.
If you forget or after too many attempts your custome question will pop up like "What's your mom's maiden name?" you just type in the answer and voila its unlocked
