Hi all. Perhaps a dumb question, but what does a rain tower look like. We have 2 towers next to each other about 1km away from my home and another one which is about 300meters from my home.

I currently have 20mbps vdsl line, no plans for fibre in our area as of yet and telkom apparently wants to remove the copper...

I am considering canning my 20mbps vdsl line and switchin over to Rain 5G. I will be happy as long as i get 20mbps or better down and 1mbps and better up.

RAIN also use buildings for their infrastructure.

Yeah Rain 5G towers seem to have zero backup.

Power went off and I connected it to my router backup power. 5G signal instantly dropped as the power went.... Have 1 bar 5G signal now picking up tower for 1.5km away that does not get loadshed the same times as me.

Still acceptable performance I reckon.... Very weak signal though. Lots of Rain too.

speeds today in general seem to be really poor below 100mbps vs 270 plus. No idea if loadshedding is a reason for this or congestion but enabling the fibre as primary now

Same here, my speeds are also much lower than usual

Mine disappeared during loadshedding too, and the 4G signal was weak enough that I switched to my backup LTE. I doubt that the one I normally connect to has battery backup, but then we've barely had 12 hours of electricity this weekend.

Anyone else getting some bad-ish speeds on international servers? I am getting 450-550mbps on local speed test servers, and about 250-300mbps on international servers. Real-world results on steam are about 40-55mb/s (they have local download servers), But when I download via Epic Games Launcher or Bnet I only get about 6-14mb/s. Running through a VPN makes the international speeds go a bit faster, sometimes it reaches 30mb/s. Strange that the VPN would increase the speed. Also my twitch.tv lags on like 720p+, but with VPN I can stream 1080p 60fps.

I might be incorrect here as I don't really use VPNs, but doesn't using one generally mean that your traffic is encrypted and thus much more difficult to tag and shape, which results in better speeds?

Total n00b when it comes to VPN but I thought its the exact opposite. More hoops to jump = poor speed. Got a BF deal on Keedsolid VPN Unlimited and speeds are horrible.

No not always speed is really main culprit that isn’t too great with a VPN but yet traffic is protected etc.

Packet headers are bigger etc so even if you have got 100/100 fibre your speed won’t be 100/100

Although I have seen very good speeds with ExpressVPN but they more than most want to pay

You generally lose a lot of speed when using a VPN. You are adding extra hops as well as having to go through your VPN's servers which needs encrypting etc. The fact that the speed increases could mean that they are either silently throttling certain services, or since this only seems isolated to international traffic, it could be that their outgoing network could have some sort of bottleneck. The VPN might route their traffic through a different outgoing point which is why it could be gettings some extra speed there.

Signal deteriorated. Install has not been touched but have gone from the low 80's to over 100. Not sure what issue is. Gone from solid 4 bars to fluctuating between 2-3. Have taken a 100-150Mbps knock as a result.

I'm assuming a tower is down/load shedding and I've latched onto another one further away.

Funny thing happened last night. Decided to buy COD MW for the XBOX. When I clicked install in an instant download speed shot to 450Mbps, bare in-mind this is wireless connection. Was quite exited as I have never seen these speeds even on my PC which is hard wired to Q2.

Short lived as it dropped to 100Mbps about 10 seconds later. This was around 20:00. My PC earlier that evening was averaging around 150Mbps, so cant explain the short lived "turbo" boost. Maybe there's a button I pressed accidentally

I think it had something to do with Microsoft, my detailed network thing on xbox always gives me a lower speed then speedtest, but last night that thing said I had 651Mbps download speed, which is definitely wrong.
