Ok

A friend of mine sent me his Nokia E65 from the UK. Only thing is it is locked to their "3 network". I've bought one of those remote unlocking codes via ebay but this did not work.
Anyone have any ideas on how/where I can get this phone unlocked?

Thx

Sounds easy enough... :)
Do you know where I can find some online guide to do exactly this?

Thx

The network lock is kept in memory that is uneffected by reflashing. Why? Quite simple, if you had a network locked handset, you could just take it to any repair center and ask for the latest version of firmware to be loaded (or reloaded) OR use the online SE or Nokia firmware updating service to install new firmware and hey presto your network locked phone is unlocked - too simple to defeat! I would imagine that the network locking information is kept in a similar or the same memory area that the product ID is kept on Nokia handsets. The product code is not effected by new firmware and requires special software to access and change.

As far as I know no special software or cables are required to unlock any Nokia handset, but you will require a special unlock code that can be entered by pressing the * key on the keypad its format is something like #pw+123456789+7#, the exact sequence of numbers between the (+) signs is based on your IMEI number and the level of lock that you want to add or remove.

Its not that simple at ALL , flashing the phone will not Unlock the phone, the unlock data is written in the permanent memory of the phone, which remains untouched during a firmware update.

Maybe you did not read my post properly, I said it CAN'T be done by reflashing the phone and I explained why... but I doubt that its saved in permanent memory, non volatile yes, because the locks can be removed.

Unlock codes

Thx for all the info..
Tell me, will only the network carrier have these unlock codes or will a Nokia agent be able to help me with this.
Then once I get the phone unlocked will I be able to remove the "3" branding from the phone?

Thx again

ok, your phone is network locked, the e65 and other new models of nokia fall under the "BB5" range, unlocking any of these models was nearly impossible up until 2 months ago... either you get so professional tools or you contact the network operator for the handset unlock codes(both highly unlikely as they are not allowed to give you this info).

phone lock info is stored in a chip known as the "UEM". software/firmware that the phone operates on is stored in NAND flash ic. thats the one you can rewrite, as for the "UEM" it can only be patched, meaning if you get you E65 unlocked, dont ever reset the settings of the phone, it will erase the patch and it will be locked again. it's the same with the sony ericssons the new DB2020 platform... real problems for people in my industry
