A while ago, one of my employees (a female) had health problems and I undertook to pay for her to visit a GP close to where we live. She went there and what shocking and unprofessional treatment by this doctor!

1. The employee's stomach was swollen/bloated and the Dr immediately said: "You're pregnant!" How can a GP EVER tell you that you're pregnant without doing blood tests???

2. My employee explained to the GP that she is not pregnant. She then continued the examination and exclaimed "You have a fibroid and it is huge!" Since when is that the way to convey medical diagnosis to a patient in such a way? Bedside manner !!!

3. The worst is yet to come: The Dr asked my employee if she can phone me to tell me the diagnosis. What in the ever-loving ****??? What happened to the concept that medical information is confidential??

I am shocked.

The doctor could have better bedside matter but thats about it.

Is the employee a maid or nanny? - That would explain the doctor preferring to communicate with you.

Sounds like a joke. I would consider reporting him if he wasn't joking around. Are you sure he wasn't just joking with your employee?

You could tell if someone is pregnant with an ultrasound. You wouldn't need any blood tests for that. Might even be able to detect foetal heartbeat with a regular stethoscope if you position it right. Not that that excuses what the behaviour of the doctor, just saying you don't necessarily need a blood test to detect the presence of a foetus.

Your benchmark for professionalism is shockingly low.

Could you answer the questions I asked instead of insulting?

Im trying to understand why he would want to contact you about this and the only reason I can think is because YOU were the one paying and this employee is a domestic (I would assume so as she cant afford her own medical aid by the sounds of things).

You'll know an insult when you get one :)

It is a domestic worker. This is not the middle ages, just because she works for me does not mean I own her and am therefore entitled to private medical information about her.

Yah I do.

So she is your domestic and you paid for her medical bill. That explains a lot. Does the doctor speak her home language fluently?

This is a GP, not a gynaecologist. Do GPs ever use ultrasound? In any event, she did not use it,so there is no way she can tell for sure if the patient is pregnant.

No and no.

I asked only one question, so Ill assume the answer is "no" to does the doctor speak her home language fluently.

Thanks.

Yeah, I agree, this doctor could have been a little more professional... but saying that I do think there is over reaction in the OP.

Sounds like he simply exclaimed that she was pregnant without bothering to actually perform a rudimentary investigation. That would be a problem.

There is nothing wrong with asking whether or not he can contact the employer to inform him/her of the diagnosis. He didn't actually go and tell anyone without consent. That would have been a problem. He may have been a little rude or a little forward in asking as that isn't really a doctor's responsibility traditionally but I don't see a problem with him asking per se.

I agree, bad bedside manners. However, I do think the doctor could have been joking. He/she may also only wanted to contact you because you were paying for the visit. Not sure if that is relevant but doctors are generally quite professional.

Oh, I have however found that they are rude/unwelcoming when they you incurr an injury where the government has to foot the bill i.e occupational hazards. Just my experience.

Yeah I do that in my job as well. I see an issue, say what it is, and find out I am completely wrong as I investigate more. I often look like a tit by jumping the gun... as this doctor did.

I concur

the Dr didn't divulge any private info, she asked for permission if she could, no problem here.

OP would so hate my GP, he is a riot, nothing about him or his manner shouts Dr:D

The GP is a female.

What would be the reason for her wanting to give me private medical information about a patient of hers? The relationship between me and the domestic worker is none of her business.

The doctor probably thought it was convenient, considering A) you were paying the bills B) the doctor might have difficulty conveying the information to the domestic and probably thinks you (being the responsible person) would be a better person for them to communicate through.

I know when we take farm staff to medical they often ask us to communicate with the the staff because of the reasons I listed above, but also including the fact that many of our staff can hardly speak English and many of them dont have a cellphone or telephone you can just phone them up on.
