I don't know if this has happened to anyone else. As of about a month ago (abouts), I get "messages" directly onto my lock screen. The functionality of the stuff is very much like when you dial the *xxxx# code to buy or access your Service provider's points menu / banking with text messages.
It's called a "Flash SMS" or Class 0 SMS.

My manager had the same thing happen to him on his Nokia Lumia 520, in his case the options were even more obscured / non existent. Basically it said the same but with a big button for OKAY and the only cancel was a small X button in the *lower* bar of the dialogue box as is the wont of the Windows 8 tiles. Luckily he heard me complaining and didn't press OKAY, which is an extremely ambiguous way of presenting choice if you ask me. Once we did press the X, the offer popped up yet again, whereupon the second click apparently did away with it.

I have to date not received a mail, except the usual "We will respond to your mail "valued" customer" response mail.

What the hell is going on MTN?

Well, if you read to the beginning, I (we) did not initially identify it as a service provider issue, however
I understand your sentiment and if the PTB here can move the thread I would not object. Or is there something I can do to move it?

Just spoke to a lady at MTN, she basically told me that it wasn't MTN specifically who was doing this, but someone was doing it through their network. I explained to her that it seemed to be something specifically tailored to MTN and hitting MTN customers, yesterday, don't know if the Vodacom guys have had this before, but I did ask her if there was something they could do to stop this, and she told me that there isn't anything really to be done. Apparently if I go to an internet site and click on something I could subscribe myself to this, which I can't remember doing. I replied that there has to be something I could do, action I could take to have this stopped, and I am sure the consumer laws are on my side, but I will find out from you guys if and how. She seemed almost reticent after that to further discuss the matter with me, but she did say that she wasn't aware of this. I don't expect her to be, I just hope that something can be done about it, I guess it just is not going to be done by MTN.

Bwana can move it, I think he was just asking if it was okay if he did.

I've been following the thread from the beginning but once MTN became the common denominator moving it began to make sense. This way you might get some MTN eyes on it. :)

I'm on there and I still got this.

I don't normally get spam sms's though

Okay, I am not the most paranoid person I know, but...

is the site legit for taking yourself off the spamming list, I mean maybe it is a way to get active numbers? Just a thought? Am I being paranoid? Anyone else hate hashtags as much as I do?

As for the spamming "Parraparra" thing, I mean it felt to me like my phone was momentarily hijacked, which is bothersome to put it mildly. Impeding the functionality of a communication device such as a cellphone, especially when it could be used for safe keeping a human life must be illegal. It's one thing to send a normal sms which people can ignore as a banner popup, but this akin to changing the channel on someone's DSTV remotely to force them to watch your ad. Wrong, wrong, wrong!

It is legit, but only affects waspsa clients. So companies that are not registered with them don't check there.

yes it is legit but like mentioned before it is only for Waspsa services.

Saying that my feeling is that since it is only on the MTN network, MTN know about this and probably are getting paid in order to allow this. I would imagine that MTN would have at least the dignity to only allow a Waspsa registered direct marketer to do this. Would be really dodge from MTN if they allowed any old company to do this.

Thanks, did that, not subscribed, the issue here being that I don't want the advert to basically impede the working of my phone as a device, especially for dialing out / having immediate access to my dialing app. This ad, for want of a better word, literally caused me to have to try and cancel twice and still cancel / cancel to just get to a point where I could access my lock screen to dial out / or see if it was some kind of SMS. That is invasive and not acceptable in my books. Like I said, it's akin to changing the channel remotely on someones TV to force them to watch your commercial. Just not on.

on mtn
you can see any subscription servises and stop them...

Also received it this morning and checked the above. Not registered to anything. MTN....soon to be bye bye. They are actively chasing clients away - This and after someone "upgraded" my contract without my consent. They got a phone from it and everything. What is going on with MTN?

I trust you lodged a fraud case and that mtn has blacklisted the handset.
don't just leave it.
