How to update your prepaid electricity meter

The deadline for updating your prepaid electricity meter is fast approaching, and many South Africans may still not know exactly how to process the update.

Non-updated prepaid electricity meters will become non-operational on 24 November 2024, giving residents less than a month to process the upgrade.

So I guess they don't get updated it's because it's a tampered meter and they don't ever recharge to pay for electricity.

Will this affect them or is it business as per usual with these illegal metres, or will electricity be cut off as well.

Customers can enter the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on their prepaid electricity meter’s keypad to view their status. The screen will display the number 1 or 2, and in some cases, it may also display letters alongside the KRN number.

If the meter displays the number 1, it is still on KRN 1 and must be recoded to KRN 2.
Thanks, very useful info here. It confirmed my meter is recoded.

I went through the process a couple of months ago when I tried to buy electricity. Received the 3 codes instead of just the one, straightforward and painless, entered them in order and done. I knew I had gone through the process but always good to see the meter reads 2 as expected.

They (CoJ) prolly going to have to do this every 3-4 years aren't they?

Code generators will still get stolen.

Found this, listing various prepaid meters and how to check whether those meters are updated:

This has helped me, one more request, As my Hexing meter has lost time and date synchronisation, how can the time and date be set? Thanks, Barrie Gonubie

out meter was replaced in 2023, so I just assumed it would have been replaced with an updated one. But about a month ago, i woke up and thought "you dealing with eskom here, let me rather check".

So i asked around and got answers like :

"When your area is being updated in accordance with the update schedule, you will get two UPDATE codes with your purchase."

This was in Oct 2024. What schedule ?!1? it should have been rolled out to all areas already.

Anyhow, i found some Eskom youtube vid that explain the procedure to check. But again, the results were not conclusive as per vid. So i sent [email protected] the below and still waiting for confimation.

does this mean my meter is upgraded?
