I dont think the new HTC's can compete anymore. I would not take the M9 either.

I would wait a few weeks for the LG G5 to get some hands on reviews of consumer versions to make a call on that vs the S7. the G4 is still an amazing phone and IMHO a better option than the M9. with the Z5 a close second (in my opinion)

honestly right now I dont know if I would get a phone. with the S7 being so new still and the G5 around the corner there may be quite a bit of merit to waiting one maybe two months. firstly for the price drop due to the strengthening Rand(if that lasts...) secondly to see the G5 the modular design is quite novel it may be the best thing ever and it may be just a gimmic who knows

The HTC M10 is being announced this month, and there is also the S7 Edge and LG G5 that are here.

Do not get the M9, it is a P.O.S of a phone, the Snapdragon 810 SoC ruined it, you'd be doing yourself a disservice going for the M9.

I would stay away from the G5. After seeing Erica Griffin's unboxing. It's not an all metal phone as advertised. And the unit she had had gaps, indentations and light leakage. Very poor build quality overall.

Crazy considering the V10 was premium AF.

I'd keep the M8 if I were you. I have to say the Galaxy S7 is a fabulous phone, but it's expensive for what it is, same goes for the iPhone 6S plus you get locked into an eco-system, but if you have the money those two are super phones.

The LG G4 would be my pick otherwise, but I'm disappointed that it hasn't dropped in price with the arrival of the G5 and there have been some questions around the phone's reliability recently, though I have no idea how serious it is. My enthusiasm for LG has also dampened after my wife's Nexus 5 has been back for repairs twice now after the modem unit first failed and then the speaker and we are waiting for a new replacement phone now.

The M8 is still very competitive against the midrange phones on offer currently. Looked at the Samsung A5 (2016) today as well and it's a beautiful device, but again very noticeable lag...

I'd say if you have a flagship phone from 2013 on wards you are not really missing out on much. Coming from a Note 3 I got a G4 on a good deal from Vodacom. I can honestly say it was a bit underwelming. Qhd screen is not a big difference unless the phone is like 15cm from your eyeballs. Fingerprint scanner... Do you really need it? Hardly any phones coming with much more than 3k mAh batteries.

Only thing that has really improved are processors and cameras on certain phones. If you really want an upgrade that would/should be the reason/s.

Also note that the G4 H815P is a LOCKED BOOTLOADER. No custom rom support. If the M8 has custom rom support on XDA maybe you should look into that. It'll be like having a new phone.
