DURBAN - UGU, South Coast, residents can expect to pay more for their water if proposed tariff hikes are implemented.

The Ugu District Municipality has proposed a 22% hike for water and to withdraw the 6000 litres a month of free water that it gives to residents.

Ugu is in the process of preparing its 2019/20 budget. The budget will include a rates policy and rates proposals.

The budget and the proposal have been tabled before the finance committee, exco and council and will undergo public hearings in May before returning to council for approval.

If the changes are approved, they will come to effect on July1.

Most Capetonians lost the free 6kl a while ago. The article doesn't mention the current or proposed rates, but they're probably both less than the CoCT rates.

OH I love this!!!

When I say the DA are the worst kind of hypocrites this is a beautiful example of what I mean.

So UGU has been in the financial dwang for some time now - going back at least until 2011 or earlier. Was placed in provisional financial rescue / administration oversight whatever in 2013. Not sure if it is still is, but last year the DA were screaming for the municipality to placed in full Section 139 administration and for a financial recovery to be implemented - their main complaints? The provision of water and billing.

Under their watch, both the water provision and financial situation has worsened. Previous interventions by the provincial government have come to nothing. The current administration cannot be trusted to turn around the municipality.

The Democratic Alliance will continue fighting for:
  • Immediate declaration of Section 139 Administration for the Ugu District Municipality
  • The appointment of a capable administrator to implement a Turnaround Strategy
  • Ugu District Municipality’s bulk water services to be handed over to Umgeni Water for management
You know what the DA's turnaround strategy is in every other town they have taken over? I will give ONE GUESS!! Look at JHB

Joburg water and electricity tariffs to rise

But when they are not the instigators of horrendous increases ...

"We will contest these hikes in council and we will be able in that meeting to give an alternative - as to how these increases should be phased in instead of suddenly putting in just 22%. Consumers are not ready - if you look at the economic climate of South Africa," Ngcobo said.

Foking hypocrites!

We lost our 6kl basic allowance last year, because of how they charge sewerage you end up more than double billed, so on essence accounts go up R300

Unless any other municipality in the country raised water tarifs by over 22% overnight I do not see how this is a comparison, while every municipality raises their tariff each year I would agree with DA that they have to be phased in it could be difficult for people and bussiness to ajust their budgets such a large amount

What do you mean by "phased in"? The CoCT has increased my water account by at least 300% over the last three or so years...should I be expecting another 300% by 2022?

Seems I was wrong looking at proposed tariff increases of COCT seem per unit was over 26% at the peak of the crisis.

Cape Town is an outlier. The increases were very large.

And then COCT just made the temporary drought tariff the new normal so they could evade the laws that prevent them from making such a huge increase by any other means.
