Urban Heat Stress Is Another Disparity in the World’s Most Unequal Nation

exactly, and cosmik debris now believes more South Africans live in shacks than Nigerians
I didn't say that. I said more South Africans as a percentage of the population live in shacks. You have yet to supply a source for your statistics.

do you do any possible work yourself or are you completely fat & lazy?

Assumption and logical fallacy argument of Appeal to Ridicule.

Q - Do you have evidence for that?
A - What? Don't you know how to use Google?

When you make a claim, the onus is on you to provide evidence for your claim. Do you know how this works?

here, this report from 2018 took all of 1.3 seconds to click on

Do you know how Google algorithms work? Your search results will not produce the same as my search results because what is produced is based on previous searches. That's the reason you need to supply your source when providing a reference.

this one town : Orangi Town in Karachi (Pakistan): 2,400,000 people in slums...

What is the Pakistani population and the percentage of their population in squatter camps compared to South Africa?

Do you know what the GINI Coefficient is? South Africa has the worst GINI Coefficient in the world. How did that happen?

See? I provided the source of my facts to show the credibility of my facts.

Yep. @Cray is probably not a registered taxpayer and wouldn't know the pain of paying about 60% and more of your income to the government.
Cute.

The top tax tier is 45% for those earning R1.8 million a year. If you earn that much money and still find yourself paying upwards of 60% of your annual income to the ROR then I stand by my statement that you need a better tax consultant. Alternatively if you are at 41% rate am truly surprised that you are shelling out an additional 19% of your income in tax.

Honestly he did express additional tax charges. This will include VAT, Property tax, fuel tax, etc…

It’s dependent on your expenses. If you break even month to month you’re paying per bracket plus all the other taxes. If you’re saving, a little less.

Sorry, was just a bit too close to mutt. Wasn't meaning to be too pedantic.

No worries, I enjoyed the age of grammar nazis, I learned so much more about spelling mistakes and grammar which is needed for me.

Instead of learning, people became upset, sigh...

That is an easy choice for me. Shade every time. Would rather just eat something I don't have to cook.

And don't act like the townships don't have electricity. See the DSTV dishes?

If you read the article, they literally say one of the solutions is to plant trees.

Say no more

FWIW, growing up, corrugated iron houses dating back from the 30's were quite a things around JHB. If shaded by trees, they were actually quite comfy. So Jan Smuts might have been onto something.

41% + 15% VAT on almost anything = 56%. Now add in the stealth taxes and taxes on taxes. Don't forget rates and taxes and sundries like car licences. Don't forget to add the 15% VAT for your tax consultant.

I was being dangerously sarcastic. Indigenous Acacia trees grow satisfy all those requirements.

Yeah, but like the Brazilian Peppers, get chopped down long before maturity for firewood

Crikey. You can't just add two tax rates together and claim that's the percentage of income you pay in tax.

Well if I just look at Pakistan as an example, UNICEF says 37% of their population live in slums and it will rise to 50% by 2050...

Crikey. You can't just add two tax rates together and claim that's the percentage of income you pay in tax.

Why not? The income has been taxed and the remainder is taxed too. We're talking ordinary salary earners here that have almost no savings (The majority of the country), not the top 1% of earners.

I'm waiting for a source that says how many South Africans live in squatter camps. Be careful of the word slum. It has a definition.

now it's a word game.. every squatter camp as we call it in south africa bar a few would be classified internationally as a slum. Squatter camps are illegal by definition, like a land invasion, hence the word squatter...

you are jumping up and down about south africa and squatter camps / slums but don't provide your own "source" and no You magazine doesn't count.

Because the percentage of your income you spend on tax depends on how much of your income you spend and what you spend it on. You can't just say that because the VAT rate is 15% that you spend 15% of your income on VAT! Effective income tax rates are also different to marginal ones.

Using the 41% marginal tax rate you mentioned as an example and using the highest gross income that rate applies to:

On R1,817,000 your actual tax payable is R644,489. That equates to an average rate of roughly 35,5%.

Now say you spend R360,000 per annum on vatable supplies - you will have paid around R47,000 in VAT.

So between PAYE and VAT, you will have paid a total of R691,489 to SARS. Thats roughly 38% of income, which while rather a lot, is still way off the 56% you claimed from those two categories.

Correct. Would a slum such as The Bronx be classified as a squatter camp? Do you see why you can't use slums to indicate how many people live in squatter camps in SA?

It's not up to me to disprove your claim. The onus is upon you to prove your claim.

Whatever. Over half the income goes to tax. Happy now?
