US giant United Airlines has cancelled its flight from Newark to Cape Town on Monday as well as a return flight on Tuesday, because the airline can't get fuel at Cape Town International Airport.

On Saturday, passengers who booked for the flights received a message informing them of the cancellation. "Your flight was cancelled because we were unable to fuel your plane," the airline said. It added that the flight's status may still change. United says it is working to reaccommodate its customers.

News24 Business reported this week that jet fuel supplies at the airport were running low because a ship carrying much-needed stock has been delayed due to continued bad weather. It was supposed to arrive a week ago.

Rajesh Dana, port manager of the Cape Town Port, said the vessel in question was expected to arrive in the port on Sunday evening.

"As the port, we are on high alert and tracking the vessel to ensure all resources are ready to receive it when it arrives. The vessel will be receiving berthing priority and we do not foresee any challenges servicing the vessel when it arrives," Dana told News24 Business.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) issued a notice to airlines on Saturday that there may be further delays in the delivery of jet fuel to the airport in Cape Town and imposed restrictions on fuel uplift to conserve fuel stocks until a new consignment arrives.

On Friday, some domestic airlines were rationed to 50% of the fuel they usually fill up on in Cape Town.

Bad news for the tourism industry.

Although we do not have many travelers going out anymore, this is preventing the few tourists who still wants to come here and leaving Cape Town hotel rooms and homes empty.

They better make a plan or something to get fuel for these jets, because this will not be the only airline cancelling.

Would a large airline like United keep a loss making route?

Lol try booking a flight bro? Its full, everywhere. And Emirates had increased even more flights to cope with the load. United is just saving themselves having a 787 stuck at Cape Town where it costs them more. Once the fuel issue is sorted things will be back. Airports have flight cancellations often - just look at what LHR did with their passenger reductions.

Those United flights are also always busy - like I said it costs them more to park a 787 here without fuel than to re-route it somewhere where it can fly as much as possible. And i use 787 loosely because its not A 787 for Cape Town its whichever one of the many their system allocates in a way to make sure they're all busy and making money.

Mad business but I can't see ACSA losing much sleep over it; CEO is Dali Mpofu's missus; make those white DA racists suffer; high fives all round. TIC of course.

I think you are way off the mark. I’ve flown in out a few times the last few months and the flights are always full. I for instance flew out of CT on Monday and back today on Qatar. Both flights were full, todays coming back had a whole lot of Germans tourists.

Just doing what too many suppliers do - order just before they run out of stock.
