I think those vehicles were just too slow to travel off ride. And use the country side and forest as cover. The road network was easier and they probably had air support.

My comment was in response to Putin calling in fighters from his allies. But I agree it's from over.
Bruh, not even Germany was leaving armour out in the open in 1944-45 if they could help it.

This is just an indictment of Russian military leadership and planning. Or Russian arrogance?

I think they thought Zelensky would book the fxxk out of Kyiv on day 1, the army would capitulate and they could roll into Kyiv as liberators.

Any sanctions would be mild and short lived, as the war would be over and a new government would be established that thanked and welcomed Russia.

Basically the way Crimea went in 2014.

I don't think he expected the mass of economic sanctions at all.

And no iPhones or Big Macs,.

Well, how did they position that DJI Phantom so perfectly for the shot? The battery only lasts 20 or so minutes... But hey keep on believing everything you see
Or ... this helicopter had been flying the same pattern for the past few days, so it was a matter of setting up an ambush for him.

The same way an F-117 was shot down.

Not at all. He expected additional sanctions similar to what Russia got after annexing Crimea.
This from the previous Russian Foreign minister. From Yeltsin's time. Lavrov's old boss.
Who is now utterly opposed to and critical of the Putin regime.

There does seem to be a myth about the mighty Russian Army.

They got their asses handed to them in Afghanistan, now they're getting their asses handed to them by tiny Ukraine.

Perhaps there is no mighty Russian Army at all.

The only helicopters that can sneak up on you are in Hollywood movies.

Can't speak to that Mi-24/35, but you could hear Pumas and Alouettes coming for a while, and Hueys coming for days.

Sitting duck is a perfect descriptor.

Even though I don't think the Hitler comparisons are fair, Putin does superficially seem like he really should retire and pass the baton on to someone else but can't trust anyone enough to do it.

Age and stress has gotten to the guy.
He can't. This invasion is his. It will be what he is ultimately remembered for.

Afghanistan and Ukraine are almost the same size.

These poor guys look like they've been at war for months.

In Sumy Region, police together with representatives of the Defense Forces detained 29 Russian servicemen
Thanks to caring residents of the Romny region near one of the villages, a group of suspects in military uniform was spotted in the field.
Does the standard Russian uniform really have no identifiable markings? No flag? Different clothing not standardized. Very strange.

What are you suggesting happened? A Russian helicopter was not shot down or a Ukrainian pilot sacrificed his life and flew a captured helicopter in a propaganda video?

Did I miss any other option?
It could be a different year/location of the video?

Most pics/videos of them don't seem to show any. Not even on videos from Russian sources iirc.

If you think about it, most of Russia's greatest military successes have been down to their ability to soak up huge losses owing to manpower and their enemies out stretching their supplies.

They essentially trade lives until their enemy runs out of lives and supplies.
