The choice is stark for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: accept that his defeat is inevitable and accept Russian terms for surrender or continue to seek a way for NATO to become perilously involved in his fight against Moscow.

Russia is making three demands of Kiev to end the war on its terms: recognize Crimea as part of Russia; grant independence to Lugansk and Donetsk in the Donbass and enshrine Ukraine as a neutral state in its constitution, meaning it will never join NATO. A 90-minute meeting in Turkey on Thursday between the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers resulted in no progress at all towards a solution, as this phase of the war enters its third week.

Zelensky veers from one position to another from day to day and sometimes within the same media interview. In his appearance on ABC News in the U.S. last Sunday he showed both defiance and potential conciliation.

Zelensky has lambasted NATO as “weak” because it has not yet intervened on his behalf. He is still asking for Polish Mig jets to be sent to Ukraine to fight Russia. He is still calling for a NATO-enforced no-fly zone over Ukraine. In this he has powerful allies at the U.S. State Department in Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, and in Congress, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

There is a discursive nervous tic all over social media at the moment, including from prominent journalists such as Guardian columnist George Monbiot. The demand is that everyone not only “condemn” Russian President Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine, but do so without qualification.

Any reluctance to submit is considered certain proof that the person is a Putin apologist or a Kremlin bot, and that their views on everything under the sun – especially their criticisms of equivalent Western war crimes – can be safely ignored.

How convenient for all those Western leaders who have committed war crimes at least as bad as Russia’s current ones.

I have repeatedly described Russia’s invasion as illegal; I have regularly called Putin a war criminal (you may not have noticed but I just did it again in the two preceding paragraphs); and I have consistently compared Putin’s deeds to the very worst actions taken by the West over the past two decades. But none of that is enough. More is always needed.

The demand for unequivocal denunciation is a strange, if common, one and suggests that those insisting on it are being dishonest – if only with themselves. The function of the demand is not to clarify whether any particular piece of information or an argument is credible; it is intended purely as a “gotcha” meme.

Which domains are active in spreading (and in some cases countering) the biolab conspiracy theory? Looking at the Twitter data over the last few days, the most cited domains in tweets with a term related to Russia/Ukraine and (“biol” or “biow”):

A quick user co-sharing domain network of the biolab conversation on Twitter (last 3 days). Nodes are domains, sized by number of tweets. Edges mean one account posted tweets linking to both domains. I’m however here over RT, so visible edges are for nodes co-shared with RT

Here’s the same graph, but hovering over the greenwald substack in the center (so the visible nodes and edges are ones that are shared by people who also shared tweets linking to that site):

Many of the websites are publishing factual content — but that factual content gets wrapped into speculation and support of the conspiracy theories.

And those conspiracy theories are being cultivated and leveraged by Russia’s state-sponsored media apparatus in support of a disinformation campaign meant to confuse and provide cover for their invasion of Ukraine.

Don’t overlook YouTube there. The tweets citing that domain (in our data) are predominantly spreading the biolab conspiracy theory.
