So one thing extremely clear here. If a modern army is not prepared to engage small to medium sized drones effectively across an entire front they are in for a world of hurt.

I don't think anyone is gonna use nukes in the forseeable future.... the threat only exists to stop others from doing it.... any bomb dropping anywhere is a loose loose for everyone.

That threat falls away when you are the only one prepared to use nukes though.

Mutually assured destruction only exists when you know your enemies are prepared to do so. At this day and age, I don't see western powers willing to go that far. And Putin may know that as well. He might be the only one not posturing.

First government to retaliate with nukes may not be popular either.

Again I could be reading it all wrong though.

At the end of the day it does not really matter, people will stick to limited conventional wars.

The only real reason the western countries never properly get involved in wars with rich european countries is a loss of profits.

I'm actually wondering about this, fair to say that the largest Nuclear arsenals are USA, Russia and China , as nations. USA has clearly said they will not send in troops etc UNLESS NATO is attacked directly, China is on the fence but also certainly not going to press a button. Russia is likely disinclined to unless one of the weaker EU nations gets frisky.

If I was in the US, I'd actually be kind of pissed that this is even going near that level as it means they would be brought into a nuclear conflict without direct involvement.

MAD is stupid, wrong and dangerous but the threat of it does work in calming stuff down.
China has the 3rd largest arsenal, but only a few more than France.
In the end the comparison is really between US and Russia. The rest are, comparatively, minor strategic considerations.

And sure I believe the people of the US would be pissed about it. At Russia who started this, and even threatened first - 100% guaranteed.

Well, if Putin launches nukes first, then I reckon it's safeties off for NATO as well then...

That's only if the nuke is aimed at a nato state, otherwise it's an unprovoked attack from a nato state on russia which makes a very obscure circular self fulfilling justification about (part of) putins claims on nato being the aggressor leading to invading ukraine.

Problem is a nuke is not really a precise weapon. Neverminded the AOE and immediate damage, the fallout is a issue and those countries are all closely packed.... hence the fear around Chernobyl.

I'm just playing it out in my mind. Let's say we see on the news a nuke go off in Kyiv or somewhere in Ukraine. What then? Who's gonna retaliate and how?

Zelensky asks European Union to grant Ukraine immediate membership

This is not going to happen, because this means NATO will need to engage in a war, perhaps a nuclear war, with NATO countries. Most NATO countries are strongly aligned with or reliant on Russia.

Ukraine is on its own.

Devils advocate here, as mentioned before, tanks in urban warfare are pretty useless unless you want to go full on maniac destructive, so this could easily be powers offloading various surplus stock as well.

Not saying they wrong but anti-tank is kind of a drop in the bucket, anti air though is another story.
So the big thing about the Sweden AT-4 and German via Nederland RPG's is that they work better at killing tanks in an urban environment over the NLAW's and Javelins since they are cheaper and smaller.

NATO and the EU have their own respective protocols.
