Zelensky: Ukraine to release prisoners with combat experience. Zelensky said it was a difficult moral choice but that it was necessary for the country’s defense. He said the the prisoners will be fighting in the hottest spots. “The key is defense now.”

Should hope that they don't 'cross' the hottest spots, but sheez... that is a blunt statement.

Did zelensky promise a presidential pardon or do the prisoners go straight back to prison after the war? A typical movie trope would be to have the prison inmate betray their combat unit and join the russians on the promise of freedom (or fake their death).

Not necessarily. I know that there are indeed some older Saffers there right now fighting on behalf of private forces. These are ex-military and police officers. They do get a salary, but I do not want one. I will join in if I can get citizenship.
