the Russian Fed UN ambassador reminds me of Gorman...

Well - his voice sounds a bit effeminate :) Ja, ja - its an interpreter.

Bottom line, the Russian dude reckons the news is all lies and everything is being distorted. But later, uses the media as being a record of how Ukraine is acting.
He claims the root of the issue is the Ukraine, and how they dealt with the folks in the Donetsk region.
He pretty much says that because of Ukrainian atrocity - Russian special operations were the next logical step.
Pretty much, the goal is protect people he says, and then goes off on why Ukrainians are bad guys, and the rest of the west etc.

Have they at least called a cease-fire ?
Saw a day ago, aljazeera was front page with Zelensky accepting a no pre-conditions meeting. Unsure of how true this is or what the situation is now but I hope it comes to resolve the current issue.

They had the meeting. No outcome, and there won't be. Russia wants Ukraine, Ukraine says no.

This whole thing should teach us the value of duelling.
If Putin and Zelinsky had just picked pistols and met at dawn we would have been over this already.
Or just do the maskless fencing thing.
Every cool scar you get has meaning.
Also with the scars you can go from politics into acting.
Not the other way around as is the norm.

Moscow:
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday announced emergency measures intended to prop up the plunging ruble, including banning residents from transferring money abroad and forcing exporters to buy the currency.

Sanctions imposed by the West over the weekend had an immediate impact in Moscow on Monday, with the ruble falling to a record low and the central bank more than doubling its key interest rate to 20 percent.

A decree from the Kremlin banned foreign cash transfers and said exporters would now be required to hold 80 percent of their reserves in rubles, meaning big groups such as energy giant Gazprom would have to buy the currency.
For Sergei Khestanov, an advisor at Open Broker, a brokerage, Russia can survive the onslaught of sanctions providing it can continue exporting gas and oil.

"For as long as there are no real sanctions on Russian exports, above all oil and gas, there won't be a catastrophe," he said, while adding that "people will of course feel the effects."

The ruble's plummet revived memories of financial instability of the 1990s, when millions of Russians saw their savings evaporate under the effect of a devaluating currency and soaring inflation.

Natalia Proshina, 75, like many Russians, feared her savings would vanish overnight.

Crimea, demilitarization and denazification of the state, and guaranteed neutral status (ie, no nato membership)

None of which are acceptable to Ukraine
Surely they can do the denazification part ?
I mean thats a biggie but doing it is morally right.

Ukraine does not meet most of the requirements to become an EU member. I don't see the practical point of doing this unless for propaganda purposes to increase moral.

The EU operates comprehensive approval procedures that ensure new members are admitted only when they can demonstrate they will be able to play their part fully as members, namely by:
  • complying with all the EU's standards and rules
  • having the consent of the EU institutions and EU member states
  • having the consent of their citizens – as expressed through approval in their national parliaments or by referendum.
The first step is for the country to meet the key criteria for accession. These were mainly defined at the European Council in Copenhagen in 1993 and are hence referred to as 'Copenhagen criteria'. Countries wishing to join need to have:
  • stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities;
  • a functioning market economy and the capacity to cope with competition and market forces in the EU;
  • the ability to take on and implement effectively the obligations of membership, including adherence to the aims of political, economic and monetary union.

however, they applied through the special procedure program, hence the ascension criteria, or otherwise Copenhagen criteria won't immediately apply. Basically, they applied to become a potential candidate, though only an option available to the Western Balkans, Ukraine has since 2020 had a special economic cooperation with the Western Balkans hence the option to become a potential EU candidate has been made available to them.

On a side note I doubt the ruble is going to be permanently at such a low level unless russia goes boom, so the current fall of the ruble is like shorting a stock, buying rubles now and waiting for it to improve when this blows over could net you a tidy profit.

Second side note, it seems countries in future are likely to ensure they have sufficient foreign currency and alternative financial systems in place before conducting open warfare.

The central bank is going to attempt to prop it up, lets see if they can though.
