It did hit 99 dollars, also for us it'll mean more fuel hikes, cause for some reason we need to track it monthly even when we had refineries
Yes, that's bad, but it's been going that direction for a while now. I was expecting something more drastic from Ukraine impact. The oil price came into play in context of Ukraine in this post.

Russia's Federation Council gives consent to Putin on use of armed forces abroad, Russian agencies report

From CNN's Nathan Hodge in Moscow

The Federation Council — Russia's upper chamber of parliament — gave consent to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the use of the Russian armed forces outside the country in connection with the situation in the Donbas, Russian state news agencies RIA-Novosti and TASS reported Tuesday.
A resolution was unanimously adopted on the matter at an extraordinary meeting of the upper house of parliament, TASS said, with 153 senators voting in favor.
"The Federation Council decides to give consent to the President of the Russian Federation for the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation outside the territory of the Russian Federation on the basis of the generally recognized principles and norms of international law," TASS said, citing the decree. "The total number of formations of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, their areas of operation, their tasks, the period of stay outside the territory of the Russian Federation are determined by the President of the Russian Federation in accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation."

Great Scott! You do know that I expressed that we took a decision on the current matter?
Yes absolutely, not poking fun or anything just mean simply that the ANC had a long, long relationship with Russia. We already took sides didn't we?

that's an annual event, not an aggression

NATO has been doing drills in Latvia (i.e. directly on Russia's border) annually for years as well ... and they started it by expanding east in the first place
How long do these "military drills" last then? Russia started massing troops in mid November already. The NATO drills are at most a month? Further Russia is clearly stating that Ukraine should not join NATO or else there will be consequences. How do you not see this as an act of aggression?

Why are eastern EU countries not allowed to join NATO? These countries have small armies and they all fear invasion from Russia, just look at the Russian invasion that took place in Georgia in 2008. Russia annexed a part of Ukraine in 2014. If Russia has no bad intentions why do they fear NATO?
I highly doubt that any EU country would want to invade Russia, and if it takes place the majority of NATO members will not support them.

Is secession illegal in international law?

14 In brief, the international legal situation seems to be that secession in the strict sense of the term is not explicitly forbidden. It is not illegal. But it runs counter to the principle of territorial integrity and the latter ultimately prevails. International law provides no unambiguous basis for a right to secession.

Self-Determination

Under international law, minority groups that qualify as “peoples” have the right to self-determination: the ability to freely determine their political fate and form a representative government.[4]
Source

Secession. While international law embraces the principle of self-determination, it does not contain a right of secession. It may be argued that international law merely tolerates secession in instances of external self-determination, where a people is colonized or oppressed (like in the case of Kosovo).

Personally I feel people should be allowed to secede though.

both sides' drills come and go, Russia has massed and withdrawn multiple times since November ... essentially trolling NATO

Further Russia is clearly stating that Ukraine should not join NATO or else there will be consequences. How do you not see this as an act of aggression?
Demanding what was promised is not aggression, if the USSR did not let Ukraine go there would be no Ukraine, if the guarantees made to the USSR were how they were convinced to let Ukraine (and others) go, then the demand is only natural and nowhere near aggression ... the ones breaking that guarantee are far more aggressive

Why are eastern EU countries not allowed to join NATO?
See above

These countries have small armies and they all fear invasion from Russia
They really don't, that's all US/NATO horseshyte, Ukraine was a top trading partner of Russia before maidan, Latvia's top trading destination was also Russia, prior to them joining the Euro zone ... they all make more money off Russia when they don't outright poke the bear

Russia annexed a part of Ukraine in 2014
Incorrect, Russia had agreements in place with Ukraine to keep a naval base there forever i.e. they certainly didn't invade as their troops had a legal right to be there

Secondly: there was an actual referendum, the west can say what it wants, you can find enough independent documentaries of Crimean people on the ground confirming they all did in fact vote to become part of Russia

If Russia has no bad intentions why do they fear NATO?
NATO was explicitly created to counter the Soviet Union, it has literally no other reason to exist ... you wouldn't be concerned by a multinational military alliance focused specifically on you?

I highly doubt that any EU country would want to invade Russia
True, but the EU is not NATO

and if it takes place the majority of NATO members will not support them.
NATO does what the US tells it to, period

How countries around the world are reacting to Russia's actions in eastern Ukraine

Germany: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stopped the progression of the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline following Moscow’s actions in eastern Ukraine. The pipeline, which would have increased European reliance on energy from Russia, has been a major source of contention in Europe and the United States for years. Without undergoing the certification or approval process, the pipeline cannot start running.
United Kingdom: Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled the "first tranche" of British sanctions on Russia, condemning Vladimir Putin's Ukraine aggression. The UK will sanction five Russian banks and three "very high net worth" individuals, Johnson said in Parliament.
"What (Putin) is doing is going to be a disaster for Russia," he said, predicting "pariah status" for the nation if it continues to further invade Ukraine.
European Union: The European Commission proposed sanctions to EU members states and placed a particular emphasis that would mirror sanctions taken in Crimea after the 2014 annexation by Moscow. Sources say US and European officials have been in intense discussions over the several past hours over how to proceed with additional sanctions against Russia.
United States: After its first set of announced sanctions on Monday, the White House has said it will impose additional "significant" sanctions on Tuesday. Monday's sanctions were cautious in nature and Tuesday's sanctions are expected to go further but it will not be the full blow that the US has previewed, pending "further actions" by Russia.
Turkey: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to recognize breakaway eastern Ukrainian territories, calling it “unacceptable," and saying it is contrary to the Minsk Agreements.
China: China's Foreign Ministry evaded more than a dozen questions on Ukraine in its daily briefing on Tuesday. In his responses, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin reiterated that any country’s “legitimate security concerns should be respected” and urged all parties to "exercise restraint.” Beijing is navigating a complex position as it attempts to balance deepening ties with Moscow with its practiced foreign policy of staunchly defending state sovereignty.

Typically China is licking Putin's butt crack.

Yes, we took to their ideological stance, which has sprouted and branched into socio and political systems. The question is, do we, the nation, owe them? We plead to the West when in trouble. Nevertheless, it is the Chinese who shape us now. As much as we want to take a position on global matters, we are in debt to both the East and the West. I wonder who actually listens to us?

To some extent I am happy that the SANDF is in ruin, we have nothing to give when the world goes into turmoil.

This is one thing that Merkel fusked up !!!

Why buy a bag of chicken for R100 when you can get the same for R50 ? (LNG vrs piped in gas)
I'm thinking she would have told the US where to get off in regard Germany sanctioning that line.

In case you didn't notice

US welcomes Germany’s Nord Stream 2 move

Washington has welcomed Berlin’s Nord Stream 2 announcement and pledged to follow up with its own measures later.
US President Joe Biden “made clear that if Russia invaded Ukraine, we would act with Germany to ensure Nord Stream 2 does not move forward”, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki tweeted.
“We have been in close consultations with Germany overnight and welcome their announcement. We will be following up with our own measures today,” she added.

High fives all round for Washington & Europe sucks the cost

Post #79 was made within 2 minutes after it appeared on the website. Thus about 35 to 45 minutes ago. The 41 minutes in the first screenshot is because I left it open.
