Johannesburg - The new US ambassador to South Africa said in an interview published on Sunday that few would travel to the 2010 World Cup in the country if crime continued at current levels.

South Africa is battling some of the highest rates of murder and rape in the world and opposition groups and the media have accused the government of failing to curb crime.

"I look at things somewhat simplistically on occasion and the issue for me is this: who is going to be interested in spending a significant amount of money coming here on holiday, to have a good time, when you're concerned about the possibility of getting hurt?," ambassador Eric Bost told the Sunday Times.

Bost, a black Republican, warned that crime was the first concern of nearly every ambassador he had met in South Africa, and of the US investor community.

Maybe he reads the news?

Members of the diplomatic corps have been targeted by ruthless criminals who in recent months have staged daring break-ins, getting away with items worth millions of rand.
-
The petition was drawn up after a Malawian diplomat's daughter was raped in her home and weeks after four embassies were hit by armed gunmen.

Criminals have good intelligence service and know where the money is, unlike Comm of SAPS who apparently has no idea of who the criminals are :)

Yes it might be staged or sensational. The point is we living in SA are in a stranglehold of criminals. At some point in time there is going to be a revolt and that is going to be ugly. Both the revolt and the consequences thereof. We all live in the SA and it is unacceptable for the Police to be at the state they are, giving there is more tax money ever available.

There is a total lack of discipline in the SAPD. I saw it with my own eyes when reporting an accident at SAP Sunnyside Pretoria. The constable had no clue what to do and even got into an argument with a Captain (Also black) as if his superior was his peer. The Captain got involved as I started to write down the Commissioners phone numbers due to inapt service.

It is just not acceptable. The entire Police force is in a state of total ineptness and leaderless.

One can start saying SA is in a state of Anarchy.

It gets worse:

An Irish golf instructor living in Durban on a work permit endured 12 days in jail because the department of home affairs could not distinguish between the numbers five and eight on his visa.

Graham said he was going to be put in the emigration section of the prison.

"When I got there, I was placed in a cell with 70 people and 12 beds. Gang leaders took four of the beds for themselves.

"Each prisoner has a blue card when they arrive, stating which section they are allocated to. My card was changed and I ended up in a cell with prisoners standing trial for murder.

"To survive I had to pay the leaders of my cell R100 for my bed. I had to buy a carton of cigarettes and had to tape R200 (for them) to the binding of a newspaper and also had to buy them airtime."

From a US Ambassador? There is no soccer of note even in the USA.
Of course. Whoever criticises government or any of the government officials is waging a smear campaign. It's the latest and greatest subsidiary of the "Blame it on Apartheid" trump card

The criminals are the SAPS and it doesn't take much to figure that out.
