This will be a silly analogy, but it highlights the difference.
If you have Covid and you fall down stairs you died with Covid.
If you're dying from TB and you catch Covid you died with Covid.
Heck terminally ill cancer patients count as with Covid if they catch it.
The reason why the "pure" number is important is that it shows lethality of the virus. Many of the deaths with covid have taken the place of seasonal flu. Which is partly why the CDC uses all excess death, however as mentioned there are factors like the lack of a serious flu outbreak in the last few years which causes what they termed "dry kindling"
