South Africa and US clash over terrorist attack alert

Members of South African intelligence engaged in a tense meeting with their American counterparts hours before the US embassy released its statement warning of a possible terror attack in South Africa.

Insiders told the City Press that the meeting included members of the SSA and CIA, and the parties clashed over the lack of information the US was willing to provide about the possible event.

The embassy has an obligation to alert its citizens here in SA of possible threats. Imagine the fallout if they didn't and something happened.
But did they should have waited for the SA Government to issue a statement first.
If any foreign embassy in the states had intelligence but issued a statement before the US, it would have caused a significant impact on international relations between those countries.

Maybe they did, and in usual SA manner, the SA Intelligent Services took to long. Hence, why they released it. The ANC like overestimating how important they are on the world stage. I have suspicion that the world leaders treat the ANC "Leaders" (take the word leaders with a pinch of salt) the same way how an adult will sometimes play along with a toddler.

The US intelligence service has been 419 scammed. A Nigerian promised them some juicy terrorist information if they paid him upfront which they did, and then he cooked up a story.

The SSA didn't even inform the union buildings.

What I think happened:
1) US found a threat, but didn't want to give out details to SA, maybe they want to protect their asset or are worried about leaks in the SA intelligence services
2) SA government not willing to issue the warning since no additional info was given beyond that there is a threat and do nothing.
3) Getting close to Sat, so US issued issued the warning to cover themselves.

The government were informed. Their initial responses in the media suggested the US gave info but wouldn't share where and what evidence they're using.

I wonder if members of the "5 Eyes" (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States) have issued terror warnings in each other's countries in the past.

South Africa is seen as a neutral state, so I would like to think the US wouldn't have trouble raising its concerns with the SA government. I think the US did have intelligence that an attack could happen that weekend. Maybe the severity of the attack couldn't wait for diplomatic channels to process the information.

I doubt the SA state would have issued a statement with haste. During the early days of the Prophet Bushiri escape, I recall how the SA justice minister was saying they were talking to Malawian officials. At the time, the Malawian government stated they had not received any formal requests from the SA government.

I'd put my money on point 1.

Lol...Im actually amazed the CIA even wasted their time with our 'intelligence'
Anything to do with security in this country is an absolute disaster and utter joke.

A public report into last year's unrest found a series of intel failures led to the riots in which more than 300 people died. The violence occurred after the jailing of former South African President Jacob Zuma.

What did the report say?

"There was a failure by the intelligence structures to anticipate and respond adequately to the violence," the report said. The police, meanwhile, had "insufficient capacity" to curb the unrest and were taken "by surprise" by the chaos.

Some of you are up the Americans' a%#s it is not funny.

The Americans were being their usual selves, bossy, arrogant with probably the wrong or fake Intel. As usual, their usual suspect partners joined in to appease the master.

Now, our government ain't sh£t either, they are probably the kings of f%*k ups in so many areas that it is difficult to trust it, but what did you expect them to do when they have tried their best to cover their bases and the Americans just wouldn't play ball?

It should be interesting to follow the story about the Americans blowing up the case that the South Africans were working on regarding the six suspects. I'd like to know more about that.

There just are too many loose screws on this Hummer, I wouldn't drive it myself unless the Americans tightened up those screws.

I am not sure what the issue is here.....

US had intel and they met with local intelligence and shared the info. Local intel felt there were no evidence and in their opinion no threat.

The only bossy nonsense I see here is SA feeling they are world 'superior leaders' and wanted to force the US into not issuing an alert.

The US did not play ball and now the 'superior leaders' are pissed off.
