A gay pride event and a two-week show staged by Jewish comedian Nik Rabinowitz were potential targets of a terror attack in the heart of Sandton, News24 can reveal.

Three independent sources – within the police and the Crime Intelligence Division – who spoke on condition of anonymity said that American authorities had warned of the looming attack and identified seven individuals believed to be part of a cell aligned to the Islamic State (ISIS).

An impeccable source close to the State Security Agency (SSA) told News24 that the spook outfit was given information by their American counterparts, but neglected to include it in intelligence products, and had cut their political principal, Minister Mondli Gungubele, out of the loop.

It is understood that none of the weekly briefing documents sent to the Union Buildings included these alerts.

The source said that SSA operatives were "scrambling" to gather intelligence, adding that peace talks between warring parties in the Tigray region of Ethiopia currently underway in Pretoria could have been a potential target.

Ewi said the growing security risk to South Africa might, among other reasons, be credited to the country’s deployment of troops to neighbouring Mozambique despite the Islamic State’s warning that should this happen, the terror group would attack South Africa.

The US embassy has raised the alarm of a "possible terrorist attack" in the greater Sandton area in Johannesburg over the weekend.

In a security alert to US citizens in South Africa, it said, "terrorists may be planning to conduct an attack targeting large gatherings of people at an unspecified location" in Sandton on Saturday.

"There is no further information regarding the timing, method, or target of the potential attack," the alert read.

The embassy advised that individuals avoid crowds of people and other large public gatherings in that area on Saturday and Sunday.

Interesting how this is following the US "foreign policy plan" for countries that don't want to work with the US and bow to the US will. Iran helps out Russia and look protests erupt in Iran, China won't actively step in against Russia and sanction Russia and look protests in China. Now South Africa won't seize a mega yacht and sanction Russia and suddenly we are under attack from ISIS. Also, we are receiving these warnings from all the US allies. Interesting indeed. And yes, I know the reasons for the protests but the US loves to ignite a violent powder keg in a country or to keep a current one going.

There never was any concrete evidence from the Americans even then, even after their warnings. You'd think they'd provide more info thereafter as they did before.

I am not saying there is nothing to this warning but they need to do better than to say they have no further information othr than a possible terrorist attack.

I think it is nice of them to give a warning.

They may have spies embedded in the terrorist organisation providing them with intel. So as not to compromise the spies, they just give a heads up but dont give anymore info. As in all things spy related, junk info and real info will always be mixed.

ANC and the greater public can use or ignore the information as they see fit.

I would say the Sandton city mall and surrounds, sasol and discovery are across the road, law firms, banks and finance houses all surround the mall a few hotels and gautrain
The rest is just residential and strip malls
