House sends bill creating January 6 commission to the Senate

The House voted Wednesday to approve legislation to establish an independent commission to investigate the violent insurrection on January 6 at the US Capitol, with 35 Republicans breaking with their party to support the bill.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy came out in strong opposition to the bipartisan deal, but GOP sources familiar with the matter said that as many as 40 House Republicans could back the plan — in part because of the 29 GOP members of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, a group that endorsed the plan Tuesday.

Saying that the protests of 2020 were peaceful is the Democrat version of The Big Lie. I guess I'm the Democrat version of Liz Cheney.

If you can't say the words 'black', 'lives' and 'matter' together and mean it, y'all might want to take a moment to assess how you got to this point.

Pointing out that last year's protests were violent, does not mean that one does not value black lives.

  • Stella Liebeck was a 79-year-old woman in Albuquerque, New Mexico, whose grandson drove her to McDonald’s in 1992. She was in a parked car when the coffee spilled.
  • Liebeck acknowledged that the spill was her fault. What she took issue with was that the coffee was so ridiculously hot — at up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit, near boiling point — that it caused third-degree burns on her legs and genitals, nearly killing her and requiring extensive surgery to treat.
  • McDonald’s apparently knew that this was unsafe. In the decade before Liebeck’s spill, McDonald’s had received 700 reports of people burning themselves. McDonald’s admitted that its coffee was a hazard at such high temperatures. But it continued the practice, enforced by official McDonald’s policy, of heating up its coffee to near-boiling point. (McDonald’s claimed customers wanted the coffee this hot.)
  • Liebeck didn’t want to go to court. She just wanted McDonald’s to pay her medical expenses, estimated at $20,000. McDonald’s only offered $800, leading her to file a lawsuit in 1994.
  • After hearing the evidence, the jury concluded that McDonald’s handling of its coffee was so irresponsible that Liebeck should get much more than $20,000, suggesting she get nearly $2.9 million to send the company a message. Liebeck settled for less than $600,000. And McDonald’s began changing how it heats up its coffee.

They conveniently virtue signal his praises now, so they can claim to be in support of his values.

Lemme break it down for you.

There is a vast conservative media machine that is committed to defending white supremacy. Worse still, liberal media all too often fall into their trap and we end up with... framing.

Framing that suits the supremacist agenda.

That conservative media machine cannot, and will not, concede that black lives matter, and so they do what they do best: change the framing.

We should be here talking about social justice... instead... here we are discussing property damage. Apparently the only thing you remember from last year's protest.

I guess there is progress: last year you denied that the protests were violent, while now you're not denying it, but trying to reframe the fact as white supremacy.

You don't need violent protests for positive social change.

Yes, I remember well the images of stores being looted and set on fire.

The vote on Tuesday's statewide primary ballot came as Republican lawmakers across the country have sought to roll back the emergency powers governors wielded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Republicans see the referendum as a victory with strong political overtones, as the state gears up for a wide-open governor's race in 2022 and Wolf leaving office after two terms.

Why are you talking about the "protests of 2020" as some homogenous, binary event? And why not address the actual protest at hand, i.e. the one the McCloskeys lied about? Which protesters were violent there? As Greg notes, video evidence shows the opposite.

lol. A company that sells a product dependent on grandiose estimates with a non-transparent methodology that cannot be verified or even seen.
