telling Justice Department superiors that a conviction is unlikely in part because of credibility questions with the two central witnesses, according to people familiar with the matter.
Senior department officials have not made a final decision on whether to charge Gaetz, but it is rare for such advice to be rejected, these people told The Washington Post, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the deliberations

Interesting article in the Economist.

Nearly one-quarter of Congress is over 70, up from just 5% in 1980. Just one in 20, meanwhile, is under 40, compared with half of the American workforce. Voters are set to elect their first Gen Z member of Congress in November’s midterm elections: Maxwell Frost, a 25-year-old activist Democrat is expected to win Florida’s 10th congressional district. But on the whole America’s legislature is rapidly getting older.

De Santis has the strong backing of the people who vote for him and fortunately for him, Florida is becoming ever so slightly more Republican. Easy win in Nov. 2022. Cry more lefties.

Also this, lol:

Partnering with his ideological opposite in Sen. Cory Booker, D-.N.J., Sen. Paul is the lead author of S. 2952, the FDA Modernization Act of 2021. The legislation amends the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act to eliminate an onerous federal requirement that all new drugs go through extensive rounds of animal testing before going to human clinical trials.

Sen. Paul is 100% correct that this Depression-era requirement has impaired the efficient working of our drug development operations in the United States. The data show us that 95% of drugs fail in human clinical trials after animal tests forecast that they’ll be safe and effective. This absurdly high failure rate drags out the drug approval process, raises drug prices for consumers, and racks up capital costs for drug developers.

Human-relevant cell-based assays, organs-on-a-chip, human-on-a-chip (microphysiological systems), and sophisticated computer modeling more accurately predict human response to new drugs, yet the FDA is bound by statute to require drug developers to use archaic, expensive, often inaccurate animal tests. Breakthrough discoveries can’t help patients if they don’t leave the lab.

Good piece of regulation to get rid of.

SEC. 2. ANIMAL TESTING ALTERNATIVES.

Section 505 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (21 U.S.C. 355) is amended—
(1) in subsection (b)(5)(B)(i)(II), by striking “animal” and inserting “nonclinical tests or studies”;
(2) in subsection (i)—
(A) in paragraph (1)(A), by striking “(including tests on animals)”; and
(B) in paragraph (2)(B), by striking “animal or human studies” and inserting “nonclinical tests or studies”; and
(3) after subsection (y), by inserting the following:
“(z) Nonclinical Test Or Study Defined.—For purposes of this section, the term ‘nonclinical test or study’ means a test or study that is most likely to predict human response based on scientific evidence and occurs before or during the clinical trial phase of the investigation of the safety and effectiveness of a drug. Such test or study may include the following:
“(1) Cell-based assays.
“(2) Organ chips and microphysiological systems.
“(3) Sophisticated computer modeling.
“(4) Other human biology-based test methods.
“(5) Animal tests.”.

I really cannot see who would be opposed to this.

Are Political Winds Blowing in Republicans’ Favor Again

For most of the summer, President Biden and the Democrats had the political winds at their backs.

They saw their poll numbers rise as gas prices fell, as the Supreme Court refocused voters on abortion, and as the Jan. 6 hearings and the investigation into Donald J. Trump’s handling of classified documents turned the media’s attention toward an unpopular former president — rather than the current one.

But with six weeks until this November’s midterm elections, there are a few signs that the political winds may have begun to blow in a different direction — one that might help Republicans over the final stretch. The political spotlight may be drifting back toward issues where Republicans have an advantage, like the economy and immigration.

It can be difficult to discern these kinds of subtle shifts in the national mood, but Google Search trends offer a decent rough measure. For the first time since the Dobbs ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Google searches for the economy and immigration have overtaken searches about abortion. Searches for democracy or the Jan. 6 hearings have also fallen.

TAMPA BAY, FL — Authorities are warning that the destructive power of Hurricane Ian is so severe that it could cause Florida to experience water and power shortage almost as bad as they have in California.

"This deadly storm could cause near California-levels of suffering," said NOAA Chief Meteorologist Storm McSerge. "This is absolutely devastating."
