Interesting story in the NYT which shows that even with suitable safeguards/regulation, the government can still fark it up royally.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has reached a $144.5 million settlement with the families of 26 people killed in a 2017 mass shooting at a church in Texas after an acrimonious legal battle in which the government claimed it was not liable for its failure to update the national firearms background check system.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland has signed off on the deal, which lawyers in the Justice Department’s civil division negotiated with lawyers representing the families of victims and survivors who had gathered for Sunday worship at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, outside San Antonio.
The settlement is among the largest of its kind, exceeding previous ones the department reached over mass shootings that stemmed from the government’s failure to take steps to prevent mass shootings by sharing intelligence and other information that might have been used to stop them. In recent years, the department paid out $127.5 million to the victims of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., in 2018, and $88 million to the families of those killed or injured in the church shooting in Charleston, S.C., in 2015.

Allegedly
No not even.

34 normal payments to his attorney at the time. Completely different amounts than the supposed hush money.

It is so bad they are not even properly alleging that Trump did something criminal.

The irony is that had Cohen been a better lawyer none of this would even be an issue. Retainer payments are quite normal.

Just the way Cohen screwed himself shows how competent he is as a lawyer, Still one of the worst aspects of Trump,he surrounds himself with complete clowns.

No, the irony is that none of this would’ve happened if Trump wasn’t afraid that having extra marital affairs would affect his base.

I agree with you. I fear though that we differ on what that says about Trump himself.

Nope he's never been a bastion of virtue, just because he stoops a porn star and has her pay him for the pleasure adds little.
If only she didn't resort to blackmail...

Total misrepresentation. Defamation is a tough cookie to crack in the US so having to cough up legal fees isn’t a win for Trump - just a win for his lawyers.
