I thought ranked choice requires 50% to win? Candidates are sequentially eliminated until that criteria is met or all votes have been counted. That's my understanding of it.

In theory, yes, but I learned that in Alaska, not everyone has to have a 2nd choice. So if a large enough number of Bergich supporters don't specify a 2nd choice, the Democrat could win with less than 50% of the total votes cast (total votes cast = 1st + 2nd + 3rd in this case). In the most extreme case, no Bergich supporters could specify any alternative, and then you'd get the results as they stand now.
