US Politics: Felonious families

The powerful Teamsters Union (1.3 million members) does not endorse Harris or Trump, although a poll of internal members showed a substantial majority for Trump. However, the poll may not be valid as it could have involved self-selection bias and not be a true random sample (statistics nerd alert :p)

The Teamsters International, a powerful US transportation workers union that represents over 1.3 million workers, declined to endorse a candidate ahead of November’s presidential election – but released data suggesting most of its members backed Donald Trump over Kamala Harris.

In polling conducted after Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris 59.6% of members said they wanted the union to endorse Trump over 34% for Harris.

The Teamsters’ decision to not make an election endorsement was the first time the union has chosen not to make an endorsement since 1996. The Union has endorsed every Democratic candidate since 2000.

It comes in the wake of scrutiny of its president, Sean O’Brien, becoming the first Teamsters leader to address the Republican national convention in July.

John Palmer, vice-president at large at the Teamsters, called the decision to appear at the convention, “unconscionable” given Trump’s record opposing labor unions.

Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, met with the Teamsters this week for a roundtable discussion prior to the decision. Trump and Joe Biden attended roundtables with the union earlier this year.

“Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before big business,” O’Brien said in a statement on Wednesday. “We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries – and to honor our members’ right to strike – but were unable to secure those pledges.”

Why is the Republican party so pro Abortion ban?

Well, wouldn't you be against something that'll **** with your supply?

I mean who else is against abortion and birth control?

The Church?

Nooo, gtfooh, for real? What a surprise.

Are you seriously trying to equate miscarriage with abortion?
He is pointing out hypocrisy...

The argument against abortion is that it is wrong because it is murder of a child.

To have that value system be consistent you would also need to care about and investigate all miscarriages to determine which ones were caused by the mothers actions or negligence because that would imply murder in the same way that abortion is murder.

But you folks are not consistent here which implies you don't really really care about the lives of children but rather control over women and marginalised populations is the true motivation behind your reasoning.

Lots to unpack here, but what do you mean by "control over women and marginalised populations"

I mean, there's at least 1 famous Miscarriage related arrest this year in the states,i'm surprised @kolaval is shaking his head at the idea
Psy when you respond like this we can actually have a conversation, good stuff.

IMHO If the people want abortions to be available, have it available.
If they want to investigate miscarriages they can investigate, because it's very possible for a woman to induce a miscarriage.

The whole debate about when the cells are a human life is interesting (It's funny how we do not even know if viruses are 'alive').

Making abortion illegal means that men can control women by trapping them with a child. And marginalized - poorer - population groups are the ones who can't afford to travel to get out-of-state abortions. So, it punishes them disproportionately

Its only following the logic that a fertilised egg is a person from day 1. Its similar to manslaughter vs murder.

I personally think it's a rubbish argument, which is the point the anti abortion evangelists seem to ignore.

What really puzzles me is IVF. I don't get why on earth Republicans would have a problem with it. I thought they were all about big trad families. But JD Vance voted against a bill protecting it and now the GOP blocked a bill so clearly they hate it for some reason.

It's probably the "every fertilized egg is a person" thing - which is ridiculous already as that's Catholic Morality policing at its finest,so they can't allow that but be anti-abortion as the two are intrinsically tied

What is a rubbish argument, day 1 or miscarriage not being the same as abortion?

Can you give an example/scenario of how a man controls a woman by trapping her with a child?

Sure. It's a recognized category of domestic abuse.

As with any type of intimate partner violence, reproductive coercion is primarily focused on gaining power in a relationship.

Reproductive coercion can, at times, even be a form of physical abuse.

If a woman becomes pregnant, the abuser might use the child to maintain power and control. For example, the abuser might say they will take the child away if the other parent doesn’t do as they're told. However, the abuser isn’t always an intimate partner. They can be family members as well.
