He was a Democratic powerbroker (like De Santis is in Florida). If you were on the wrong side of Daley, it was extremely unlikely you would have got very far in Chicago or Illinois politics. You don't run for SIX (!) terms as Chicago mayor without having significant political leverage and patronage.

Okay, so you see similarities in the influence they both play(ed) in their respective political machines. What does that have to do with the modern GOP being virtually indistinguishable from a cult? How was Daley similar because what you described isn't that.
