The announcement came after US warplanes launched a strike against several suspected members of al-Qaeda in Somalia on Monday.

They want an 'in'? Like Darfur? Or Liberia? Or Rwanda? Or Chad? Or any of a number of conflicts they've been invited to attend in mineral rich African countries? They're being torn apart in the media for NOT becoming involved in the OIL RICH Sudan for goodness sake

the US is probably playing chess, and making a few 'in advance' moves..

1.. as a rear guard, supporting the slow buildup of ships taking place further north, ahead of possible Iran attack..
look at http://www.theodora.com/maps/new/middle_east.gif

2. providing a quiet signal to China that it should keep its ships clear. (recall me a while back, suggesting that China is blocked from Caspian/Arabian oil - and would probably need to gain footholds in Africa, and work its way up towards the various oil sources.. hence the gradual China-friendly behaviour of the ANC, and the equally interesting 'interest' in Zimbabwe, by China itself, for instance)

3. one should remember that in the game of 'energy wars' - the only thing more important than securing oil reserves, is to try and block your enemy from securing oil for themselves - even if you dont want to grab that oil yourself just yet..
So methinks there's a lot of 'pre-emptive' chess moves quietly going on, below the radar - by various powers, ahead of actions months and years (if not decades) into the future..

Or, maybe the Americans are there to take advantage of the unique opportunity the Ethiopians have created by driving the Somali AQ out of Mogadishu? They've got Special Operations MH-53's and AC-130's staging out of Djibouti and a Carrier Battle Group off the coast to provide direct action should any HUMINT or ELINT sources pick up the inevitable AQ logistic chatter.

Witness. It begins:

A U.S. Air Force gunship has conducted a strike against suspected members of al Qaeda in Somalia, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports exclusively.

The targets included the senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa and an al Qaeda operative wanted for his involvement in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa, Martin reports. Those terror attacks killed more than 200 people.

The AC-130 gunship is capable of firing thousands of rounds per second, and sources say a lot of bodies were seen on the ground after the strike, but there is as yet, no confirmation of the identities.

The gunship flew from its base in Dijibouti down to the southern tip of Somalia, Martin reports, where the al Qaeda operatives had fled after being chased out of the capital of Mogadishu by Ethiopian troops backed by the United States.

Once they started moving, the al Qaeda operatives became easier to track, and the U.S. military started preparing for an air strike, using unmanned aerial drones to keep them under surveillance and moving the aircraft carrier Eisenhower out of the Persian Gulf toward Somalia. But when the order was given, the mission was assigned to the AC-130 gunship operated by the U.S. Special Operations command.

If the attack got the operatives it was aimed at, reports Martin, it would deal a major blow to al Qaeda in East Africa.
