Hey everyone,

I have been noticing this happen a lot recently, that when I plug in my USB 3.0 External hard drive into my USB3.0 port (1 of 2 of them), it shows the message "This device can perform faster if plugged into a USB 3.0 slot....". The thing is, the slot is USB3.0, I have the USB3.0 Driver installed, and all. I have the Dell XPS L502X Notebook, it is about 3 years old now.

Does anyone know why this keeps happening? I will definitely be calling Dell soon...my laptop hard drive keeps making funny tapping sounds a lot more...this is a sign that it will die soon...Hard Drive senitel told me I have 294 days left.

Thanks

I suspect its an issue with the drive. The on-board USB controller is probably stuffed, and it's defaulting to USB 2.0, even though it's being plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Either that, or you have a driver related issue on your PC. Have you tried updating the drivers to the latest ones from the Dell website?

Also, have you tried testing the port with another USB 3.0 hard drive or other device?

USB 3 is such a POS to be honest.

I'm also having the same kind of issues with my EVGA USB 3 to DVI+HDMI adapter, where the device is complaining that it can run in USB 3, but is using USB 2 instead.
The worst problem that I've had with USB 3 so far, was when my BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle (USB 3) device did not work at all, because of my motherboard's poor USB 3 chipset that is incompatible or unable to provide enough power. So I ended up having to buy a PCIe USB 3 card.

0. Test on different computer. If the same, see below.
1. Make sure to use original cable. Also try different USB 3.0 cable, it can be damaged. If hard drive takes power from USB port, cable should be short due to the noise induced on the ground line. It could failover to 2.0 due to the noise. 30cm should be fine.
2. USB ports might not deliver enough power to the hard drive delaying spin-up, try self-powered 3.0 hub. Power supply should deliver 1.5A.
3. As Pada says.
