am I right in saying if you have a gift (voucher) card that has the Visa or Mastercard logo on it, you can use it like a credit card in any store, in any mall, regardless if the card says Sandton City or Rosebank?

I wouldn't think you can use it online, as there is no way to validate the card as you do with a normal online credit card purchase.

Gift cards with a visa/mastercard logo on them are nothing more than debit cards. Check if it has the 3 digit CVC on the back, and then you can use it online as well.

Yea, you can.

I pulled that silly drunk when I was younger at the bar when you whip out a gift card / loyalty card once, waitress swiped it and it went through.

It's probably a prepaid debt/credit card, the difference between the 2 is now blurred, both can be used in exactly the same way except one does not offer a line of credit.

you can use the card anywhere.

a sandton city gift card can be used at sandton city or eastgate with no extra charges.
if you use the card anywhere else, it attracts a R13-50 fee. i dont know why but it just does.
so if you have a R500 card, you may use it to buy R500 stuff at sandton or eastgate, but only R486-50 anywhere else.

The one having a credit line was always the only difference.

I read in another thread that this was possbile using a Sandton City Gift card, has anyone done this? Pay an easy pay account at Checkers and you use the cash as "payment" to yourself or cashing up the card.

Yes, I use these cards all the time. I usually get them from work. You can use them anywhere, but you will be charged a small admin fee. I would budget on leaving R20 on the card for you to cover the fee.

Thanks. I don't think I explained myself correctly. Would I be able to go to checkers money market and use the gift card to make a payment to myself using the money market facility with the card and then get the cash from checkers with the pin and my Id book.

Bit of a resurrection - anyone managed to use a Sandton/Eastgate/other gift card for an online purchase?
It's the Mastercard debit card, powered by Tutuka and Standard Bank

Try buying R5 airtime on Takealot and you'll have an answer chop chop.

My online purchase didn't work, but couldn't figure out if it was a merchant problem or a card problem

I've tried using those shopping mall Gift Cards for online purchases with no luck. But never had an issue buying petrol with them.
