Major shift in used hybrid prices in South Africa

South Africans can buy affordable low-mileage hybrids at a fraction of the price of new models — and even their more fuel-thirsty petrol equivalents.

An analysis by MyBroadband found models selling for as much as 40% less than when bought new, despite having less than 50,000km on the clock and boasting model years from 2022 and later.

The comparison doesn't seem like for like? How do these prices compare with an equivalent petrol/diesel used model?

Hybrid batteries are much cheaper.

BMW I3 is about R350k for the battery but thats pure electric.

I know they Hybrid Yaris was about R25k, and the Prius even was R30k.

So if you drive a lot which this article seems to think, then yes it wont benefit as much. Inner city driving will be better. Thus why some people have a weekend family car, and then a local city car for just work and back and groceries.
And add in a home charger at R25 000. Then the increasing price of electricity is not helping the EV narrative. You would need to use 12 kwh per day to charge every night.

isn't a 320d just more economical. an looking at those prices, cheaper now as well.

1.2Turbo ?? CVT with belt that wears??? no thanks.

The 1.8 engine in the Hybrid corolla has
1) port and direct injection which keeps inlet valves clean and run efficient.
2) has no turbo so engine is unstressed , no waste gate actuator wear, no turbo wear
3) no CVT belt to wear. ( show me a DSG or CVT that lasts in traffic)
4) no clutches

Qoute from Toyota for replacement 1.3kwh battery is R34600. It is under the rear seat , easy to remove and replace.
I spent much more on that fixing turbo , clutch , gearbox wear on my 2012 1.4 tsi jetta at 200000km from Cape town traffic.

hybrid system in the corolla has been in development since early 2000's in the prius.

The battery normally needs replacement between 10 and 15 years.
