Are these still used? I remember in the early 90s I used to use them a fair bit. Have forums taken over their need or is there a place where I can find them?

I believe one needed to find nntp servers.

usenet is still alive and kicking - its just that most isp's are filtering content. nowerdays you have to find a 3rd party and pay them for unsensored usenet. : (

Usenet is alive and kicking. You can find everything and anything there that you could find on a p2p network, and probably more at better connection speeds. Don't bother with your ISPs nntp service - they typically won't keep all parts for large files like .avi's etc. Use a pay nntp service like www.easynews.com.

I get a sustaned rate of 38k per second on my 384 adsl connection from easynews. Muuuch better than p2p :)

Access to a news server is really cheap LabAnimal. $10 buys you 20gig of transfer from easynews.

You can also try http://www.teranews.com/ . Not as good as easynews, but it's free.

Daily Block Pricing
Daily Download Limit Monthly 6 Months
50 MB FREE ($3.95 one time setup fee)

Did you trust them with your credit card details or is this a new fee?

Cheers

Thanks regardtv,

what I wanted to know was if it was genuine.
Too many horror storys out thaer of giving card details to validate and next thing you know you card is maxed out.

If you are OK with it I will give it a go.
and no I don't hold you responsible :)

Cheers
Chris

Let me save you the hassel - not much going on with these free news servers, just about all have connection problems so they probably do not exist anymore. I forgot all the fun I had with these servers in the beginning - could get just about anything - I think I will give that other free one a try again.

Hmm - OK, I''ve signed up to terranews 42242 news groups - speed quite nice. Reminds me of the days I used to frequent these groups - was a bit of a waste on dial up as you would spend hours jusr following a topic (reading) and waste your dialup time - now with a permanent connection I'm going back to usenet - can spend days here lost in any subject under the sun - used to get really nice technical info to fix video machines and such in the past. WOW - Love the eBooks group. I am on sick leave for 2 days with torn ligament in the ankle - will keep me busy....!
Thanks sparklehorse.
