Uses for "local only" accounts?

Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone could give me a few suggested ways that a "local only" account could be used. For example, a 10GB "local only" account is very cheap (R79), but what could I do with it?

Thanks!

erm... apart from surfing local sites or sending/receiving email (if I were using a local email address...), what would justify a 10GB local only account?

I know that I could download the latest linux distros such as Ubuntu, but I don't think I'd be able to do the updates as I think the repositories are hosted overseas.

So, would I be able to do anything else with such an account, or is it fairly pointless?

Dude, ONE WORD:

Piracy.

Not everyone is a frikken pirate. If someone asks you "What's the point of places that sell Porches and Lamboghinis?" Are you gonna tell them "So that we can steal them!!"?!?! No, you wont.

So answer the question PROPERLY.

For home users :
I think most of the guys use local bandwidth only accounts for :
1. Local multiplayer gaming (mainly mweb and sgs servers)
2. Downloading copyright movies, apps, etc. from the IS news server
3. Sharing copyright movies, apps, etc. on private DC++, torrent, etc. networks

Online gaming doesn't use that much bandwidth - a 6 hour session with 32 users in most games wouldn't use more than 100MB.
This leaves me with the impression that the vast majority of local only bandwidth is used for illegal means.
I'm sure there are guys that use it for legit purposes but they're certainly in the minority.

For corporate customers :
They can link their branch offices together with VPNs and cut their costs of communicating and moving data around by a HUGE amount.
No need for a JHB branch to phone the CPT branch when they can just use VOIP through their VPN connections.

I think he's gonna have better luck with news.is.co.za ... ;)

That said, search for problems wih the IS news server - there are plenty. Decide for yourself if you think it's worth it.

There's also the SGS (saix's games) ftp server you can download stuff from, like game demo's patches and free games. The BF2142 demo alone is 1.02Gb

VPN to my office. Connect to apps that run on terminal servers, SSH/telnet into servers that I do work on. Local is really lekker in this case. Why must I use expensive international bandwidth for this.

I would think that a few people, companies in particular would enjoy using them for a vpn.

Apart from that there really isnt much point in local only. I've always considered it an abomination of the internet - you know - world wide web and all.

BF2 uses 100MB PER HOUR son!

Glad to see you like to make judgements about what people do with their bandwidth cause according to you, apparently if you dont play games then more than likely you are a pirate.

The anti-piracy film advert goes 'you wouldn't steal a car' Well I would if I could download it, is the most obivous answer to that one :p

I'm assuming you never ever speed, or break any rule/law at all. Otherwise you wouldn't be so quick to make accusations about other peoples use of teh interweb.

What people do with their bandwidth is up to them.

I said most games - not all games.
You need new spectacles grandpa.

Well which home user uses 10GB account for LOCAL surfing and e-mail only?
There simply isn't that much interesting content on local web sites to require all that bandwidth.
The vast majority is used for piracy - prove me wrong.
Go read the threads about the IS news servers, torrents, etc.
For coporate use on stuff like VPNs I can understand the need for lots of local bandwidth.

What people do with their bandwidth is up to them.

Yes and I was merely responding to the original poster's question.
He wanted to know what people do with all that bandwidth.
I never said people shouldn't download illegal content.
Why are you so defensive? Do you have a guilty conscience bugging you?

You seem to forget there's plenty of open source, legal, freely available stuff out there. Also a lot of people only use it as a starting point and connect to some sort of international proxy to get international connectivity.
