Hi,
I have been having a bit of problem lately. My friend has a cable line and its working perfectly on his laptop. But when I connect that cable line to my laptop, its not working. I know the simple solution will be to use a crossover cable or a router and do a sharing. But I really dont want to use sharing as I will be getting my own line after a month. And besides, the other laptop has only 1 lan port. So I dont want to share but just use the internet sometimes by using his line.

I think the line is encrypted and only allows one computer(that is specific). I tried to copy all of the ip settings from ipconfig to my laptop and it connects(usually if i leave it at automatic detect ip, it says problem with acquiring ip address) but even after connecting, it just doesnt receive packets and doesnt browse the internet although it says its connected at 100mbps.

Any ideas or workaround to make both the laptops use the same line at different times?

Thanks for helping me out.

ok try to log onto the router and check that DHCP is enabled on the router and see that enough ip addresses are open, then select on your network card to aquire ip auto. Cuz its not as easy to just copy the ip stuff from the other laptop as that ip, if recieved from dhcp will be linked to the MAC address of the other laptop and thus will not work with yours.

Should work then, or get a hub and connect the router to the hub and the 2 laptops to the hub and that will work fantastic.

Well as I said, its a simple cable line that just connects into the laptop network port. There is no router or broadband modem in between. And besides, I dont have a router or a broadband modem to configure. So all I want is to use that line in my laptop as well using my network port.

I know networking sharing would be an easy way out but i dont have the resources for it(not to mention the painstaking settings) for it.

cable as in cable tv?, can't help you there, i guessing you not in south africa (this is a south african site) and we don't have cable only adsl.

The only thing i can think of is that every pc that connects to the network is locked by MAC address on the network card and well no amount of tinkering on your side will help.

Another method to try is not to connect anything for 30 minutes to the line - then try again with another PC.

Chances are it holds the MAC address, and releases it after a while.

use the same tcp/ip settings as he's got...( while he's pc is unplugged ). If yours can connect, just add a diff number to your pc's ip number ( ie if he's is 192.168.1.3......you change yours to 192.168.1.4 )..ONLY under IP ADRESS!!!

You can change your MAC address, google for utilities that allow you to do this.
