I believe that when you have a Telkom contract you can use MTN's network when Telkom's network is not available. Can somebody tell me how it works.Does your phone automatically switch to MTN when it cant pick up Telkom ? Do you have to pay extra?

Yes just leave the phone on Auto and make sure you enable data roaming on your device. I see the new contract deals just have All network data which means there is no real difference bundle and price wise if you use your included data on MTN or Telkom Mobile.

I'm really not sure how contracts on Telkom Mobile work out of bundle but as long as you stick to your included data there will be no extra fee if you use MTN network.

Maybe someone else can comment if you are able to buy extra data on contract and what options are available but for prepaid you get Telkom Mobile only bundles which works on the Telkom Mobile network only and All networks data bundles which work on both MTN and Telkom Mobile networks but is more expensive. Voice and sms would work on both with no extra charge..

the above statement is correct. I personally have a telkom smart data 50 contract. I can use the talk time on both telkom and mtn. only gripe is I get 500mb for telkom but only 75mb for mtn per month.

you can also only use mtn if you like, with no extra costs, without using telkoms network at all. to do this set your networks to manual and select mtn.

One more question:
when I go to the farm and there's no TM coverage, is there any way to have voice also roam?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.
I want to get a TM contract, but I'm a bit worried about not having signal when I'm in a remote place with only MTN/Vodacom coverage.

Voice automatically roams on MTN's network if roaming is turned on, on your phone.

While DATA also roams on MTN, it is much faster when on the Telkom network. I find data is max GPRS speeds on MTN, so I prefer to stay on the Telkom network as much as possible.

Voice and SMS will also roam on MTN anywhere. The rates are the same and you can use your free minutes/SMS too on MTN. It is as if it is a normal MTN contract. Only the data portion is either "on-net" data, which only works on Telkom towers, or "All-networks" data, which works on Telkom or MTN.

I can get 3G/HSDPA on MTN in Northcliff. It's not like roaming on Vodacom with a Cellc sim card where you are limited to roam on Vodacoms 2G network , With telkom you DO roam on MTNs 3G/HSDPA network.

Then perhaps the few areas I do have to roam, also have old MTN towers?

Possible, but let me add, I roam on MTN even if I can easily get a fast Telkom 3G connection. I'm basically roaming on MTN in Sandton Johannesburg so MTN 3G coverage should be no surprise, they probably even have LTE there.
