An off-campus residence was set alight and properties were damaged after a disagreement between students and the residence's management.

The police have arrested seven Vaal University Of Technology (VUT) students, aged between 18 and 26, after one of the student residences in Bedworth Park was set on fire on Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda reports there was a misunderstanding between the students and the management of the residence over NSFAS payments.
“The students set furniture from the residence on fire. This includes washing machines, fridges, laptops, printers and CCTV cameras in the guardroom as well as administration office.”

Funda reports the damage is estimated to be around R200 000. “We are investigating a case of malicious damage to property.”

Take their NSFAS payments away. They don't have any respect. And clearly if they're burning stuff down the students haven't/aren't learning anything. There are other smarter students who could use that money.

Those VUT students are mostly there for one thing and one thing only, one massive party and piss up session.

The amount of noise and music coming from their parties almost every night is so loud that it sounds like they're having a jol in my parents' backyard which is a good 3km away.

So yeah, the majority there aren't learning anything.

Why is this almost every time the go to thing to do is burn stuff, hell when I was growing up it never crossed my mind to set something alight as you respect other peoples property.
Because government, academia and the big corporates tolerate it.

EFF goes and trashes Click's store over misinformation? Clicks has a polite conversation with Malema about how racist they are and apologise"
University students go and trash artwork and university property? University management has a polite conversation with the "student leaders" on how racist they are and apologise.
Municipal workers go on strike and burn down infrastructure? Government goes and gives them a nice wage increase and tells them how evil the capitalists are.

One word should be said whenever someone engages in violence:
NO

A university can simply expel the students for their behaviour. And then expel anyone who continues to cause violence "in protest" of said behaviour and so on until they are left with a bunch of engineering nerds, math students and accountants in their university.
The big corporates can get their private security to frogmatch the EFF out of their stores.
And the government can simply fire the workers for embarking on an unprotected strike.

I only ever see one culture burning ****, makes you wonder if it's not imbedded in the genes.
Yes, its in their genes. Imagine if this culture was in power decades ago, would we have all these nice buildings in place, all the infrastructure we currently have? A big NO! Now a days they build something half completed and then everything stops, all the money is gone, nothing left. They can only destroy and not really build something to be proud of it. Its really a sad culture this.

Why the F do they always set fire to things when there's an issue with their free education? Do they not know and understand they're burning down the infrastructure and places where they'll need to sleep? In which case the varsity will now need to provide them with temporary shelter along with fixing the burnt building.

FFS grow up!

This is precisely how things used to work in the 1990s when I was at varsity. However, students have WAY too many rights now and you cannot trample on their entitlement and wants. That's not done. Rather placate them and continue to let them believe that if they throw their sh(t around they'll always get what they want.
