Valentines day: To celebrate or not to celebrate?

So... The dreaded V-Day looms ahead. I've never been one to expect lavish gifts but I do like to go out and have a good meal at a restaurant that I/we otherwise wouldnt go to. I've heard, though, that many many many people are choosing NOT to celebrate this year (I'm assuming it boils down to monetary constraints). What are you and your partner / hand / pet doing this year? Avoiding unneccessary expenses or treating your S.O. ?

Yea they had a thing on Highveld the other day ... you'd be surprised how many girls would just order a take away and snuggle with their SO and watch a DVD.

I was taken back as well!

V day is stupid, rather save your money and go buy/do twice as much stuff for the same price on the 15th of Feb ;)

LOL @ people fretting over Valentines Day...it was the one day in the year when I made myself skaars...switch off the cellphone ignore emails and generally pretend to be busy when chicks are starting to imply that they're expecting some sort of date. This was brought on by the fact that I was a man-whore of sorts back in the day but I've changed my ways and now only have one chick...thankfully I'm nowhere near SA to be engaged in any V-Day BS which brings me to the second part of my objection...it's a fukkin money-making racket which is an absolute waste considering the perilous economic times we're living in.

I made bookings at wombles, got the set menu and the price...R450 per person...had a laugh at that.

Now we staying home with a pizza. All phones off.
Both of us are actually happier with it.

That's my point exactly, why people allow themselves to be conned only Jeezus knows.

With Johnny, Jim, Jack and the Captain :p

Also sounds like a plan :D

I normally buy a bunch of flowers the day before Vday - when it is still cheaper. Hide it in the garage and then surprise the wife with breakfast and flowers on the day. Otherwise - a normal day for us.

Valentine's Day is a money making scheme that has cleverly duped many a couple and singleton to feeling obliged to involve themselves in the days silly traditions. Why isn't everyday Valentine's Day?

Because it's difficult to keep up that level of devotion and spoiling each other every day (and it wouldn't be special if you did).

I agree Valentine's Day has become very commercialised, but if you want to avoid the high prices just pick another day to pamper and spoil each other.

I have spent lots of money on Valentine's Day in the past but I realise now I was just fitting in with what the SO wanted, not what I believed.

Death to all Hallmark holidays is what I say.

I don't normally do much on Valentines, but this year I made a reservation at a good restaurant - in general though, all the restaurants have a set menu of 3 to 5 courses and some insist that you pay in advance! Its amazing how few set menus cater for vegetarians :(
