ICASA has shut down various wireless networks in Sandton. ICASA confirmed that it confiscated wireless equipment from high sites in Sandton yesterday. According to an anonymous source ICASA ‘invaded’ high sites in Sandton with a court order and armed guards, confiscating equipment from various wireless providers. A number of businesses were off-line due to the removal of this equipment. ICASA said that the reason for confiscating the wireless equipment is that the providers did not abide by the high site installation rules from ICASA. The violations listed by ICASA included frequency irregularities and the lack of required information on the antennas.

With the court ruling we now have 600 Vans license holders to protect the WUGS from Icasa confiscation. Icasa tolerated Wi-Fi if used for non-profit purposes, but I think merely the fact that WUGS can no partner with any Vans in theory alone would probably convince Icasa not to hunt down a WUG providing commercial Internt access.
