One a side note while on the dog food topic.
Is there no other manufacturer other than Hills that makes Hypo Allergenic dog food ???
You cannot get Hills for love or money at the moment and Vets are saying they might only have stock next year !!

Yup
Back in the day when our parents were kids, dog food was unheard of
There was no such thing as tin food for dogs, nor those big 25kg bags of dog biscuits or whatever it is that people buy every day for their dogs

Back then the family used to cook food for the dogs in the kitchen. Potatoes stews, porridge, etc and add the leftover meals bones into it.
Far closer to their natural diet. They are scavengers.

Wait, people feed their dogs a diet exclusively made up of dry pellets?
Some do with the odd scrap of meat every now & then. Not sure what that random piece of meat is contributing nutritionally to a dog other than just a a bit of protein that in the end makes it not much different from a vegetarian dog food.
Yikes.

Those pellets make up only about 30% of an average meal for our hounds.
Depends greatly on which ones you are referring to, they are not all one product but for what it's worth: dogs are actually best adapted to digest carbohydrates. Their diet actually demands very little protein relatively speaking. You will find that modern breeds have various sensitivities and allergies that a balanced dry pellet diet can cater to.

I give my two Jack Russell lots of organ meat and eggs. It is very affordable and they love me for it.

They also get Jock dog food, seems to be one of the better affordable dog foods.

Friends of mine have a dog that has metabolic issues and gets violently ill when fed animal proteins.
Effectively the dog is on a vegan diet and is happy as can be.
Put the dog back on "normal" food and the dog has chronic digestive issues, fatigue and rapidly loses weight.
When a puppy, it was touch and go until they figured out the protein/metabolic issues.
In this instance, the vegan option saved the little guy.

I feed my dogs carrots instead of bones.

Also easier to spot the poo.

If that is all you feed a dog, then yes, 100% animal abuse.

I encountered a chick that was making her cat be vegan. I can assure you I didn't hold back on what I told her. Complete and utter morons.
Cats are obligate carnivores. Unlike dogs and humans they can't synthesize taurine which they can consequently only get from animal products such as meat and milk.

Therefore vegetarian cat or vegan cat would be a prematurely ex-cat.
