Vehicle licence renewal problems in South Africa

The Minister of Transport's refusal to extend the validity period for vehicle licences in South Africa will lead to dangerous queues and severe backlogs at licensing centres in South Africa.

This is according to Justice Project South Africa chairperson Howard Dembovsky, who told MyBroadband that licensing departments are under severe strain across the country.

Renewed my drivers licence last year just before the 1st lockdown. Once everything kinda opened again was able to collect it fairly easily and quickly. So got lucky there.

Vehicle license I renewed last month via FNB app and had no issues whatsoever.

You're lucky - between the vehicle licenses, social grants, and now fishing licenses there are massive queues at our local POs here in PE.

The one at The Bridge is the best to use.

My least favourite shopping centre.

I found someone who works for a financing company who is willing to slip in my application with a bunch of theirs. If that doesn't work I'll go to Hunters Retreat.

Bit the bullet and renewed my vehicle license on the 31st of December.. took about 3 hours at the PO up the hill from me.

Even if they extend the validity of the vehicle license by some miracle, they definitely won't be waiving the penalty fees and those add up damn quickly so after about 6 months or so it starts getting to the point of being worth spending the 2 or 3 hours in the PO queue to just get it done.

I've been celebrating that idiot's tweet cause I'm 8 months overdue and refuse to stand in the long lines for renewal.

I just use the MTN MoMo app. Works fine.

So, oddly, sitting with a similar problem, 15000Kms away.

Waiting for DHS to issue me a DS2019.
DS2019 gets me a drivers license.
License gets me insurance.
Insurance gets me back on the road.

Does this country enjoy being stuck with hysterically out dated processes and poor service delivery? Serious question, though said in jest.
Why must we have a new piece of paper stuck to our dash boards every year and for the most part encounter hours to weeks or even months of frustration trying to renew it?
Why do we simply not, at a minimum, get a unique license disk when the car is first registered in your name, transferred to you etc and then simply renew this online when required? No new piece of paper annually etc, simply an update to the system that indicates your unique license is up to date and valid. (presuming no details of changed..owner, address etc)
The only time you'd need a new license disk etc would be when the vehicle is sold, transferred to a new owner, it's gets water damaged etc.
This way, reduced waste of unnecessary paper, no need to waste time and energy queuing to pay and simplicity for all.
Or is it about having menial jobs throughout the chain that stop this kind of service simplification? Genuinely, it seems ridiculous that simple solutions to this mess are not being applied. Make it easy for people to renew and people will.
Bonkers.
