Vehicle license expired and can't renew during lockdown

Yesterday, I was stopped in a roadblock and realized that my vehicle license had expired before the lockdown.
Received a R1000 and was told that must renew it online.

I have gone to the goverments e-services website, registered, but it says:

Motor vehicle licence renewal services will not be provided during the COVID-19 national lock-down period.

So what do you do if your license expired before lockdown? Doesn't seem to be any way to renew?

Can they give you another fine if you carry a recent one with you? I just moved out to the countryside and need to be able to drive!

Hi

That is only valid for vehicle licenses that expired during the lockdown. My vehicle license expired before the lockdown.

The traffic officers yesterday gave me a fine, because my license expired before the lockdown.

Keep that fine with you so they don't give you another one. Not sure if that'll work, but it's worth a shot.

I think you have 21 days grace after vehicle licence expiry, so if the lockdown was within that period you could argue that's why you couldn't get it renewed. Otherwise...eish.

My car license expired end of Jan and I only realised in Feb. I renewed online and mid March I contacted them as I still did get my license. They told me they can see I paid and I will be ok. I went in anyway just before lockdown and got a copy. My suggestion is to renew online and pay. At least you are then covered from not being able to display it via directive.

I am not sure that keeping the fine with me will work?!? I have left it in the car though.

License expired 31 JAN already! I was moving house at the time; was rather distracted.
My previous car which I had for many years was always up for renewal in August... I'd got used to renewing every August and didn't even think to check the current car!

I have done the online renewal application, but don't think i will get to the point where I can pay. Their website clearly says:

Motor vehicle licence renewal services will not be provided during the COVID-19 national lock-down period.

The validity of a driver’s licence, learner’s licence, motor vehicle licence disc, temporary permit, professional driving permit and roadworthy certificate will extend 30 days after the end of the lockdown. A directive confirming this was issued on 30 March.
So you have 30 days after when lockdown level 1 ends? Mine is about to expire,so I don't have to do it and have 30 days when all lockdown ends?

Don't want to be stopped and to explain and get a fine

My thinking is that you can prove you've already been issued a fine during lockdown which might mean they'll let you go off without another if they catch you.

I'd definitely challenge this with your online application proof. Surely you have a receipt of some sort that is timestamped?

You are fine, because yours is expiring during lockdown.
I have a problem because mine expired before lockdown

They do give you a reference number, but no receipt etc - as the dept is meant to email you requesting payment
they are closed, so they won't be doing this.

Probably 30 days after the lockdown level where it was last not considered essential.. it may be added as part of level 3 or 2..

My wifes driver license also expired just before the lockdown, end of Feb. We also only realised that during the lockdown. We phoned them and they say there's nothing they can do for us because because it expired before the lockdown. So what now, my wife goes and do the shopping and now she can't go out with the car because it is illegal and because of insurance. This country is run by morons!

Well, let's not blame the morons as you call them because you forgot to check when your car's license expires... You had 27 days before lockdown started to renew...

If you have an expired vehicle license and you are involved in an accident or the vehicle is stolen can your insurer repudiate the claim?

They will try.

(Unless the Ombudsman has issued a decree that covers the matter for all.)

No they don't, not decent insurers anyhow. They have basically all stated that if during lockdown your disc expired they will settle the claim. Don't know about the crappy direct insurers but they should follow suit.
