Have not found anything conclusive on this forum regarding the unshapped service from Verizon. Would you reccomend it instead of SAIX?

Definately

I have used IS, SAIX and Verizon and after switching a number of times, I have settled on Verizon from www.vanilla.co.za - R290 pm for 3Gig.

From experience, Verizon is far more reliable than SAIX, it is genuinley unshaped, it has low latency and works beautifully for voip. I have never been happier.

Bwana - correct me if I am wrong, but your experience is being cheesed off with Verizon fro doing you in by taking your uncapped service away... I would be too... what do you use right now... what experience do you have with the Verizon unshaped service?

Honestly, it is better. AND you won't be putting a cent into telkom's pocket for the ISP portion.

Verizon is the closest we come to broadband in this country.

Just curious, does Verizon Business not use & pay for Telkodemonopolies supplied & maintained links, what about IPConnect & SAT-3...?

I've been using a unshaped account this month as well as my WA Unshaped, TelkomInternet Shaped account, and IS shaped.

Downloading is slower on the Verizon account than I would have hoped - I rarely get half of my line speed as compared to full speed with my wa unshaped (or shaped for that matter) and Skype tends to have a higher error count than I experience with the saix flavour.

EDIT - Sure Verizon didnt win any favours from me for discontinuing the uncapped service but they could have come up with a better offering than this IMO.

I find that amazing - I too have compared each side by side and I believe Verizon have a lower contention ratio. But I won't dispute it - I get 50+k per second consistent international downloads on 512k line...

btw - do you have an example file or site to test?

AFAIK they use Sat3, but implement different (better) policies than SAIX with their alotted pipe/s. There was an article about it some time back, I will google for it.

Mostly from downloading site backups on a regular basis - sometimes the speeds were decent but certainly nothing special. I've since consigned the account to downloading junk - have to use that 3gb afterall. :) Honestly given the choice between a SAIX shaped and a UUNET unshaped I'd take the SAIX.

I've got to ask the geeks around - sorry Bwana, but I believe you are one, although a cool one ;)

What purpose does this serve:

Sorry - guess I'm not a big enough geek  Though the title of the image would lead me to guess that its Verizon's rack at the Johannesburg internet exchange (JINX) where they peer to other ISPs. http://www.ispa.org.za/jinx/index.shtml

Wondering

So would your backups you are downloading be downloading locally only? i.e. is it not possible that you are experiencing a weaker peering setup than SAIX for example? I can believe this and can't speak for verizon's peering setup. I believe they have upgraded it, but since so many more sites are hosted on IS and SAIX, this would stand to reason. I use a local only IS account and Verizon for international only using Antibody's excellent RouteSentry - maybe that is why I am so happy.
Have you tested international downloads side by side?

UUnet suck big time now. They have crippled their uncapped option. Can't cancel it cause we have a contract, but they want us to cancel so they can discontinue it.

Works about as good as a telkom capped account on international browsing. Web pages time out, mail gets bounced and downloading anything is impossible.

That's not the same account we are discussing here - the new accounts are different. All high performance low latency unshaped capped.

Agreed, but you have to question the ethics of a company that will deliberately degrade one service to an unacceptable level in order to promote another more costly one.

It doesnt exactly inspire trust in my mind.
